China's Zhengzhou-Wuhan high speed rail opens Published on 28 Sep 2012 by GoUTube123 on

A high-speed rail service linking Wuhan and Zhengzhou in central China has opened. The Wuhan-Zhengzhou line is one section of the high-speed rail service that will connect Beijing to Shenzhen in the south by the end of the year. The bullet train is capable of traveling at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, and cuts the current 4-hour travel time between Wuhan and Zhengzhou by more than half. The opening of the high-speed service means there are now trains leaving Wuhan for Zhengzhou every twenty minutes.

As the most cost-effective fuel choice, coal is responsible for powering 45 percent of America's electricity needs and freight railroads are a big part of that. Railroads deliver more than 70 percent of the coal used to power American homes and businesses, and to make products like steel and medicines. Thanks to improvements in efficiency and productivity, America's railroads charge the lowest freight rail transportation rates in the world, keeping America's electricity prices affordable and our manufacturers competitive.

America's freight railroads deliver the goods consumers want and the raw materials businesses need. Delivering for every sector of the U.S. economy, America's freight railroads move 43 percent of intercity freight traffic -- more than any other mode of freight transportation -- and help power the nation's economy. And freight rail, which moves 1/3 of U.S. exports to port, will be even more important to our future as the nation strives to double exports by 2015.

Passenger compensation has become "increasingly generous and easy to apply for"(ATOC)

27/09/2012

Responding to union claims over passenger compensation paid out by train companies, a spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies said: “This claim demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of how the railway works. Under a system regulated by the Office of Rail Regulation, Network Rail pays money to operators for problems which cause disruption to services and put people off from travelling by train in the future.

“As part of entirely separate arrangements, passenger compensation has become increasingly generous and easy to apply for. As a general principle, train companies will compensate anyone who has bought a ticket for a journey that is cancelled or substantially delayed.”

    National Rail travel bulletin (ATOC)

The vast majority of trains are running as normal today(Wednesday) despite the bad weather.
In the last two hours 90% of trains were on time across the rail network, and there are currently only eight services delayed by 30 minutes or more.
A spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies said: “Most passengers travelling by train today have experienced no problems whatsoever, but where there have been delays or cancellations we apologise if your journey did not go to plan.”
Robin Gisby, managing director of network operations at Network Rail, said: “While the majority of the rail network is unaffected by the severe weather, flooding is causing delays and disruption to some journeys in the north of England. As the weather passes, our engineers are working to get these lines running normally as quickly as possible and restore high levels of service.
“A small number of lines remain closed owing to the severity of the flooding. We are working with train operators to divert services around the affected areas where we can and alternative transport is also being provided to help people on their journeys.”
To get the latest real-time rail travel information, passengers should use the National Rail Enquiries (NRE) service, paid for and run by train companies, which they can access on the move. Passengers can:
    • Download the free NRE apps foriPhone and Android smartphones, giving instant access to real time running information, journey planning and information on any disruption.
    • Visit the nationalrail.co.uk website to access live train departures boards and journey planners and to search for local operators’ trains.
    • Follow NRE on Twitter or their train company here.
    • ‘Like’ NRE’s dedicated Facebook page.
    • Call NRE’s automated TrainTracker service on 0871 200 49 50.

BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS IN HELPRINGHAM, LINCS (Network Rail)

Four bridges are being renewed in the Helpringham area as part of a significant package of investment by Network Rail in the Lincolnshire area.
The bridges, at Helpringham Road, Mount Lane, Scredinton Road and Fen Road in Helpringham are being upgraded to boost capacity on the railway through Lincolnshire. Work on the structures starts at the end of September and is due to complete by the end of the year.
Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail, said: “This package of investment will deliver a more efficient railway and allow additional services to run on the lines through Lincolnshire. The bridge works include replacing the central section of each bridge and we are also installing higher parapets and new crash barriers to improve safety.”
Road closures and diversionary routes have been agreed with the highways authority and will last for approximately three weeks. These are:
    • Helpringham Road from 28 September 2012
    • Mount Lane from 5 October 2012
    • Scredington Road from 16 November 2012
    • Fen Road from 30 November 2012

    Notes:

Network Rail is investing £280m renewing the line from Peterborough to Doncaster via Spalding, Lincoln and Gainsborough.
Scheduled for completion in spring 2014, works include the replacement/enhancement of a number of level crossings, renewal of the existing signalling system, bridge works and extensive track renewals, replacing older track with a modern equivalent helping reduce the environmental impact from passing freight and passenger traffic.
On completion, the project will deliver enhanced safety, improved performance and reliability, a reduced need for heavy maintenance and will provide additional capacity for freight traffic when required, with each freight train taking approximately 60 lorry journeys off the roads.

Ecuador signs up for WATTRAIN CONGRESS 2012

We are very pleased to announce that Ferrocarriles del Ecuador will be making a presentation about their newest tourist attraction at the WATTRAIN 2012 CONGRESS.
The railways in Ecuador have been moribund for a number of years, but a new initiative from the Government, aided by the National Railway Museum at York, has seen the railways reinvigorated as a tourist attraction in their own right. This will see them take their place as an important part of the Ecuadorian economy and WATTRAIN is delighted to have a representative to tell us how this was achieved.

The work is set to be completed in phases with the final phase finishing in spring 2013.

Unique high-speed trains and locomotives on the Russian railways (TheRussianRailways on YouTube)

Sapsan (Velaro RUS) is Russian for the peregrine falcon, the fastest bird in the falcon family, so it was an appropriate name for this new train, which can reach speeds of up to 250 kmph. Produced with true German precision by Siemens, the Sapsan is fully adapted to the harsh climate of Russia.

The Allegro is equipped with safety features designed to work on both the Finnish and Russian railway networks. Its equipment meets the technical requirements in the EU and Russia. The train consists of 7 carriages and has a maximum operating speed of 220 kph.

GT1-001 gas turbine locomotive: on 23 January 2009 this locomotive became the first to pull a freight train weighing 15,000 tonnes (159 wagons), and on 7 September 2011 it set a new world record by pulling a 16,000 tonne train (170 wagons). On 12 October 2009 Russian Railways was awarded a Guinness Book of Records certificate for creating the world's most powerful long-distance gas turbine locomotive operating on liquefied natural gas.

Electric locomotive type 2ES10: the first Russian freight electric locomotive of direct current with the asynchronous driving unit. The locomotive was designed by Uralskiye Locomotivy Ltd. in cooperation with the Siemens (Germany) engineering team. The locomotive performance characteristics have no analogues in Russia. On August 4, 2011, the 2ES10 locomotive in the three-unit mode took the 9,000-ton train down the Sverdlosk-Pervouralsk distance of the Sverdlosvsk Railway. It will let the railways work without re-forming and cutting trains' payload and will let heavy trains service of the standard payload running along the Western Siberia-Northwestern Region route. JSC Russian Railways plans to purchase 221 locomotive before 2016.

Diesel locomotive type 2TE25A: the freight diesel locomotive with the asynchronous driving unit type 2TE25A was designed at the Briansk Machine-Building Factory in cooperation with the industry research institute VNIKTI using the Russian-made equipment and details. For the first time the diesel locomotive is equipped with the Kolomna Factory assembled diesel with the electronic fuel injection complying to the Euro 3 environmental standards. The locomotive has the bogies with the radial wheel pair arrangement and has better track contact performance. In Masrch 2011 the 2TE25A series engine took the standard 6,000-ton payload train along the Baikal-Amur Mainline proving its high power and economic capacity.
