Baroness Kramer opens Folkestone West station improvements
£1.7 million investment in station building and car park.

Transport minister Baroness Kramer visited Kent today (29 July 2015) to see how £1.7 million of investment has transformed Folkestone West station, providing more comfort and convenience for passengers.

Baroness Kramer officially opened the new facilities, which include a new waiting room and booking office, and an expanded car park providing an extra 200 spaces. Additional bike racks have also been installed, and the customer information system has been upgraded.
Baroness Kramer said:

These improvements at Folkestone West will transform the passenger experience, providing greater comfort and convenience, and making it easier for people to travel to work and leisure opportunities.
As part of our long-term economic plan, we have invested £1.7 million at this station and we are committing £38 billion over the next 5 years to improve and maintain the UK’s rail network, in order to meet the needs of the increasing numbers of passengers using the railways, and the work at Folkestone West is a great example of this.
Work to the car park started earlier this year and has boosted the number of available spaces to 270, in order to accommodate the increasing number of passengers using the station now and in the future.
The station also has a new forecourt area with a customer drop-off point, and a new ticket office designed to meet accessibility requirements. A new ticket vending machine and information monitors have been installed, along with an upgraded public address system.
Charles Horton, managing director of Southeastern, said:
The new car park and booking hall at Folkestone West provides a more welcoming station environment for our passengers and offers us room for growth.
We chose to develop the facilities at this station in response to calls from passengers for more parking spaces and have worked with our industry partners to deliver facilities that are fit for the future. At a time when rail passenger numbers are rocketing and we’re expanding high speed services through the station, this investment offers a welcome boost to Folkestone.
The work has been funded by the Department for Transport and Network Rail through the National Stations Improvement Programme and Station Commercial Project Fund (SCPF).
During her visit to Folkestone, Baroness Kramer also travelled on Southeastern’s high speed train to see first-hand how the service is providing improved connections to London and benefiting the local economy.

Crossrail.
Restoration of derelict Victorian rail tunnel complete

  • Docklands rail tunnel built in 1878 to be brought back into use for Crossrail
  • Three years of work to widen and strengthen the tunnel ready for modern trains
  • Work to breathe new life into the Connaught Tunnel – a disused rail tunnel in Docklands – has been completed as part of the Crossrail project.

The 550m long tunnel runs below the Royal Docks next to ExCeL London, close to London City Airport. The tunnel was built in 1878 and has not been in passenger use since December 2006.
Work was required to deepen, strengthen and widen the structure and to remove 135 years of coal and soot from the steam trains that originally used the tracks. Last summer, 13 million litres of water were drained from the dock that runs above the tunnel to allow Crossrail workers to access the structure from above. The work in the tunnel has featured in BBC2’s documentary The Fifteen Billion Dollar Railway, the third and final episode of which will be broadcast at 9pm on Wednesday.
The rail tunnel originally served the Royal Docks when they formed the largest enclosed docks in the world, serving large ships from all over the globe. It survived a hit from a bomb during WW2 and is the only existing tunnel that will be re-used for Crossrail.

Linda Miller, Connaught Tunnel Project Manager said: “It’s great to know that, thanks to our work, this 135 year old tunnel will once again have a vital role to play in London’s transport network. Once Crossrail opens in 2018, up to 12 trains an hour will pass through the tunnel beneath the Royal Docks, hugely improving links between southeast London and the rest of the capital.”
The tracks, overhead cables and communications systems required to run the trains will begin to be installed next year. Up to 12 trains an hour in each direction will pass through the tunnel, reducing journey times and supporting the wider regeneration of the Royal Docks.
With Crossrail, the journey from Abbey Wood to Bond Street will be around 20 minutes quicker and passengers travelling to Heathrow will be able to cut around 40 minutes off their journey.

Londoners don’t want a staffless, soulless Tube system .. (Christian Wolmar)

The London Underground is the single most important piece of public infrastructure in the capital. Over three million people use the Tube each day, to get to work, visit family or see friends. A healthy Underground network is at the heart of a healthy, vibrant London. It is a fantastic system that is the envy of the modern world, but we must ensure we do not neglect our crown jewel.

Later  today, I will be addressing a conference on the future of the Underground at Congress House and setting out my Mayoral vision for a people focused Underground built on sound investment and proper engagement with staff and customers.

Firstly, sound investment: This of course means investment in the network and new technologies, but also in the staff. The current Mayor’s vision for the Tube is built on doing away with ticket office staff and drivers. This is a mistake. Having spoken to people at my campaign meetings across the capital it is clear that Londoners don’t want a staffless, soulless Tube system. The millions of people who use it daily want the Tube system to remain safe and welcoming with staff on hand to deal with emergencies and provide information.

The current Mayor’s plans for cabless and driverless new trains are not about improving the system or encouraging people to use the Underground but are part of a campaign to destaff large swathes of the system which will deter many users. In fact, they are a smokescreen. The truth is that for safety reasons, London Tube trains will always need to be staffed because the tunnels are so small and stations so far apart. Moreover, the only convenient place for a staff member would be at the front, so the idea of ‘cabless’ trains are merely a way of suggesting that it is possible to run the service without people which in fact will never happen. It is dishonest anti-union propaganda that needs to be dispelled.

Stations, too, must remain staffed for the whole time they are open. People use the Tube because they know that they are safe and that help is at hand if there is trouble. The unstaffed stations of the National Rail network are often little used at night precisely because people fear for their safety. Even in ticket offices at the lesser used stations, there must always be a member of staff available to help people buy tickets and to provide information for people negotiating the system for the first time. I remember trying to use the metro system in Seoul last year at stations where there were no staff available and the system was difficult to understand. We must ensure the London Underground remains a welcoming place for people and easy to navigate.

Secondly, we must have a management model built on far proper engagement with staff and a Mayor that is willing to listen. The current Mayor has gone out of his way to antagonise workers and has refused to engage with the unions. Moreover, he has used the threat of removing staff from both ticket offices and trains as a way of causing confrontation. A much more co-operative approach with the staff would benefit both sides.

Maintaining the quality of the Underground system is vital. Through proper investment and better engagement between managers and staff, we can ensure that the Underground is able to power London for decades to come.

Ilkeston railway station: Plans delayed by great crested newts.(BBC News)

Crossrail is one of the most ambitious transport construction projects undertaken in a generation. As Europe's largest construction project, Crossrail's legacy will be more than just the delivery of a world-class railway; sustainability has been at the heart of the project since its inception. From Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, the Crossrail route covers over 110km of track. It includes 21km of new twin-bore tunnels, 10 new stations and will serve a total of 40 stations. Crossrail will, for the first time, deliver a direct connection between all of London's biggest employment centres linking Heathrow with the West End, the City and Canary Wharf. The new railway will increase rail capacity in London by 10%, reduce journey times, ease congestion and improve connections. Services start running in the central, tunnelled section in 2018 and Crossrail will be fully operational in 2019.The principal reason for building the railway is to secure London's competitiveness as a world city. This requires an efficient and reliable transport system that keeps people moving and supports the future population and economic growth. The challenge is to achieve this responsibly and sustainably, with the minimum environmental impact.A total of £14.8bn of funding is available for the delivery of Crossrail. The new railway will support regeneration across the capital and benefits the UK as a whole. Crossrail is estimated to generate at least £42bn for the UK economy.

Crossrail's intention is to lead the way in constructing and delivering a sustainable and energy efficient railway fit for the future. Crossrail will have a long-lasting impact on how people travel around London and the South East.

    A Railway War Begins
    Episode 1 of 5

    Duration: 30 minutes

World War I was a railway war. Michael Portillo finds out how the railways helped to precipitate a mechanised war, shaped how it was fought, conveyed millions to the trenches and bore witness to its end. He takes to historic tracks to rediscover the locomotives and wagons of the war that was supposed to end all war and hears the stories of the gallant men and women who used them in life and in death.
Michael travels through Britain and northern Europe uncovering railway stories from the Great War. He begins his quest in the French city of Metz on European tracks built with war in mind, charts the birth of the railway war at a small station in Luxembourg and discovers how Britain's railways coped with the challenge of sending thousands of troops to join the conflict from Southampton. Finally, he returns to France to learn how the early war of movement gave way to the stalemate of the trenches.

Christian Wolmar - Engines of War

After being asked to film this By Peter Lewis from Steamtube for Christian Wolmar, its a great insight into the book

Engines of War tells the dramatic story of how the railways revolutionized the nature of warfare, ushering in an age of industrialized conflict in which wars were fought on a previously unimaginable scale. From the moment of its first appearance, the 'iron road' not only rendered armies more mobile, but also massively increased the power and the deadliness of the weaponry available to them. Christian Wolmar's epic account - of how an invention that brought prosperity in peace-time metamorphosed in time of war into a weapon of death - is counterpointed by a wealth of human stories of personal endeavour and private tragedy. Embracing every major conflict in which railways have played a part - the Crimean War, the American Civil War, the First and Second Boer Wars, the two World Wars, the Korean War and the Cold War, Engines of War is awe-inspiring tale of industrial might and the transformative power of machinery.
