Isambard Kingdom Brunel is revered for the brilliance of his engineering, but one railway expert thinks the history books have got it all wrong.
Adrian Vaughan, a signalman on the North Norfolk Railway, has spent many months studying Brunel's letters and diaries.
He concludes that Brunel should be remembered not for his brilliance but rather for his blunders.
Mr Vaughan argues Brunel made a series of disastrous mistakes and has taken the credit for work that was not actually his.
Most controversially, Mr Vaughan claims that the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge was not designed by Brunel.
He argues that the bridge, completed after Brunel's death, bears little resemblance to the original design and would have fallen down by now if Brunel's plans had been implemented.
Inside Out West and Inside Out East can be seen on Monday, 5 December at 19:30 GMT on BBC One HD and BBC One West - and for seven days after on the iPlayer.
