16 years ago, in 1996 (4th February ) the first two British passenger franchises- South West Trains (part of the Stagecoach Group) and Great Western trains- start operations.

In April, Gatwick Express, Midland Mainline and Great North Eastern railways start franchises.

In May, Railtrack is privatised, and Connex South Central and LTS Rail start operations.

In July, Chiltern Railways begins operation of its franchise.
