16 years ago, in 1996 (4th February ) the first two British passenger franchises- South West Trains
(part of the Stagecoach Group) and Great Western trains- start operations.
In April,
Gatwick Express, Midland Mainline and Great North Eastern railways start
franchises.
In May,
Railtrack is privatised, and Connex South Central and LTS Rail start
operations.
In July,
Chiltern Railways begins operation of its franchise.
A Chiltern London service at Stratford-upon-Avon
Cardiff
Railway Company (operating asValley Lines) and Wales and West (both
subsidiaries ofPrism Rail); Connex South Eastern, Island line,Isle of Wight
(Stagecoach group); and Thames Trains(Go-Ahead Group.)
