Melbourne trials new level crossing safety system
TRIALS of a new train-to-car wireless communications system designed to improve safety at level crossings are taking place this week in Melbourne.
Israel Railways seeks refurbished locomotives
ISRAEL Railways (ISR) is inviting bids by May 29 for a fleet of between 10 and 12 secondhand or refurbished diesel-electric locomotives with an option to purchase addition units. ISR is keen to acquire the locomotives as soon as possible and within the next six months.
Korea unveils latest high-speed train
THE HEMU-430X prototype high-speed train was officially unveiled on May 16 in Changwon in the presence of the presidents of Korail, Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) and Hyundai-Rotem. The train will now begin an intensive programme of test running.

Australia to set up single national rail regulator
The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) will set up a new single National Rail Safety Regulator in January 2013, which will replace the seven state-based regulators in Australia.       
                   
Sumitomo, Cienco6 win metro railway contract in VietnamJapanese contractor Sumitomo and Vietnam-based construction firm Cienco6 have won a $2.25bn contract to build the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro system in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam.

The UK government has approved a £58m pilot scheme to run new trams trains on both rail and tram networks in South Yorkshire.
