University launches rail course
AUSTRIA: St Pölten University of Applied
Sciences has extended its range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. A
Masters course on Railway Infrastructure Technology is offered over four
semesters to provide ‘more detailed knowledge of railway building, track
maintenance and installations’. However, the course treats the railway as a
single entity to provide ‘optimal understanding and synergies’ to students;
alternative study modules are offered in both railway construction and
operations. The Masters course is open to 25 students per year, with courses
beginning in September. It is targeted at graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in
an engineering-related field, including those who have taken the university’s
own BSc course in railway infrastructure engineering, which was launched in
2008.
Ferronorte opens to Itiquira
BRAZIL: The Ferronorte network grew by a
further 120 km on June 2 when freight operator América Latina Logística
officially opened the section between Alto Araguaia and Itiquira in the state of
Mato Grosso. The 140 km Itiquira - Rondonópolis route is expected to open by the
end of 2012. ALL President Eduardo Pelleissone said that the opening marked
another step in the development of the operator's northern network, a programme
that began in 2009 and which is expected to have cost a total of R$700m when it
is completed later this year. 'Above all, we are bringing ALL closer to the
agricultural producers of Mato Grosso, who lack the necessary logistics
solutions to export competitively', he said. The lastest extension to Ferronorte
serves a grain terminal in Itiquira covering an area of 70 ha. This is expected
to handle some 2?5 million tonnes a year, mainly soya.

UNIFE World Rail Market Study
The latest World Rail Market Study, published by UNIFE in co-operation with The Boston Consulting Group, will be launched at InnoTrans. The largest of its kind, the study is based on a survey of the 50 most significant rail markets worldwide and provides an overview of the global rail industry including potential market volumes. Further information is available at www.innotrans.de and www.unife.org.Public Transport sector grows
Since 2010 the number of exhibition halls representing Public Transport has doubled from three to six. A strong international presence is expected, covering a wide range of products including passenger safety and information, communication technology, data management, ticketing systems and traffic management. Several public transport operators will also be taking part in the trade fair this year. The International Design Forum, part of the Public Transport & Interiors Hall Forum in Hall 6.1, will be held on September 19 from 13.00 to 18.00. With a theme of Spot on Materials it will feature a panel discussion, portfolio shows and two lectures, including one by Nicola Stattmann who will illustrate the potential of the creative use of materials. An exhibition displaying innovative materials and their utilisation will accompany the programme.Combined displays
The number of combined national and regional displays is also on the increase. This year there will be a total of 37 combined displays from 22 countries including Brazil, Australia, Taiwan and South Korea, as well as newcomers Hungary and the USA. InnoTrans 2012 will provide a concentrated yet comprehensive overview of the international market for rail technology products.Alstom signs Schwebebahn ETCS signalling contract
GERMANY: Wuppertal transport agency WSW
Mobil has awarded Alstom a €17m contract to provide Atlas 400 ETCS Level 2+
signalling for the modernisation of the Schwebebahn suspension monorail. Alstom
will supply trackside and onboard equipment for the 13·3 km line, 20 stations,
two depots, 31 new articulated trains being supplied by Vossloh Kiepe and the
historic Kaiserwagen vehicle which dates from 1900. Completion is scheduled for
2015. Announcing the contract on June 7, Alstom said this is its first German
order to cover all aspects of signalling from route setting and interlocking to
train protection and control. According to the Alstom the ETCS Level 2+ will be
similar to Level 3, with the train reporting back its location rather than using
track circuits or axle counters detectors. However, fixed block sections will be
retained. The Wuppertal implementation will also use Tetra radio rather than
GSM-R communications. 'This project allows us to make a big step towards the
introduction of ETCS technology in Germany', said Dr Martin Lange, Managing
Director of Alstom Deutschland.
