Crossrail

Briggs and Forrester Engineering Services Ltd has been awarded the contract to install the mechanical, electrical and public health services for the Canary Wharf Crossrail Station. The contract works include electrical systems, cooling, lighting, drainage, power and pump systems.

The company was awarded the contract by Canary Wharf Contractors Limited, part of Canary Wharf Group, which is designing and building the station box on behalf of Crossrail Limited for a fixed price of £500m. Canary Wharf Group is contributing £150m.
Canary Wharf Crossrail station will be one of the largest across the new Crossrail network and is being constructed within the waters of North Dock. The station box is approximately the same size as One Canada Square laid on its side.
Above the station box, Canary Wharf Group is developing four levels of retail space and a spectacular roof-top park, partially covered by an elegant, semi open-air timber lattice roof.
In March 2012 Canary Wharf Contractors Limited completed and handed over the lowest level of the station box to Crossrail, five months ahead of schedule and within budget, ready to receive the tunnel boring machines in 2013.
After the tunnel boring machines pass through, Canary Wharf Contractors Limited will fit out the station with work due to complete in 2015. Work continues to construct the levels sitting directly above the station box.
Michael Bryant, Operations Executive at Canary Wharf Contractors Limited said: “The delivery of Crossrail Canary Wharf station continues to move ahead. Significant progress has been achieved to-date, which has meant we could deliver the lowest level of the station to Crossrail five months ahead of schedule and within budget. We have started fit-out of the station above the platform level, with work continuing next year. Briggs and Forrester’s expertise will allow us to continue to deliver this much needed piece of transport infrastructure for London ahead of time, within budget and to the highest possible quality standards.
Crossrail will dramatically increase the capacity and resilience of transport services to and from Canary Wharf and the surrounding area, helping underpin further development and investment in this key business and shopping district. Journey times will be cut to many destinations across London. It will take just six minutes to travel to Liverpool Street, eight minutes to Farringdon and 39 minutes to Heathrow. The Crossrail service at Canary Wharf will be 12 trains per hour in each direction during the peak. Crossrail services will commence in 2018.
ENDS

The Kingsway Tram Tunnel in Holborn, a unique part of London’s transport history, will be temporarily re-used for Crossrail.

Crossrail’s western tunnels contractor, BFK, is making use of the historic subway, closed since 1952, to build an 8 metre deep, 5 metre wide, grout shaft below the floor of the tunnel.
Grout shafts allow engineers to pump grout (a cement-like substance) deep into the ground to firm it. This will protect nearby buildings from any potential ground movement when Crossrail’s tunnel boring machines reach the area in 2013.
The tram tunnel underneath Kingsway once took passengers from Holborn to Waterloo Bridge, providing a link between the north and south London tram networks. For the past 60 years it has been all but abandoned, given over to several uses including local authority storage, and seldom opened to the public.
Keith Sibley, Crossrail Area Director West, said: “The Kingsway Tram Tunnel has played a fascinating and unique role in London’s transport history. Now it will play a vital part in helping prepare the ground for the city’s most ambitious transport project to date. As the tunnel is a Grade II listed structure, Crossrail will return the Camden section of the tram tunnel to its prior condition when the works are completed.”
Martin Harrison-Putnam, Head of Collections, London Transport Museum said: “The tram tunnel operated for less than 50 years and provided the only link between the north and south London tram networks. Opened in 1906, serving two subterranean stations at Holborn and Aldwych, the tunnel was enlarged in 1929 to accommodate double deck trams. The pioneering decision by London County Council to construct the country’s first tram tunnel was both innovative for its time and now of enduring historical importance.”
The shaft will be completed later this summer before the arrival of Phyllis and Ada, Crossrail’s western tunnel boring machines, in 2013.

Barcelona and Santiago de Chile metro systems have signed an agreement to collaborate and share know-how regarding operation and technology of railway systems in order to promote consultancy and technical assistance joint projects.

(13/07/2012) The framework agreement signed by both operators plans to stimulate collaboration on the supervision of projects for emerging rail transport networks in Latin American countries, such as Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Peru and Brazil. More specifically, the collaboration aims to encourage the submission of bids to provide technical assistance on fare systems, commissioning of new lines, maintenance and rail safety, among other aspects.

To promote collaboration and boost joint projects between both companies, the two operators plan to sign specific agreements as well as establish a joint committee to monitor the process.

Thirteen SFM trains sold to Portuguese company

(13/07/2012) According to SFM, railway operator of the island of Mallorca, the reason for the sale of these diesel units is the commissioning of electric units on the Palma-Enllaç line, which has meant a reduction in the number of diesel units needed for daily service.

These trains came to the island’s network between 1994 and 2003, when only the Palma-Inca line was operative. Several sections of the network closed in previous decades, like the ones to Sa Pobla and Manacor, have been subsequently recovered, with extension works to other sections like Artá.

Basque company CAF built 46 motor cars and 6 trailer cars of this series, which operate in M-M and M-R-M compositions. The trains have a power of 310 kW and two Cummins engines that allow them to reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
First guarantees of Mecca-Medina High Speed project issued
The Mecca-Medina High Speed Spanish Consortium has issued the first guarantees needed to start the project via the syndicate of banks consisting of BBVA, Banesto, Banco de Sabadell, Crédit Agricole, Caixa Bank and Deutsche Bank.

(13/07/2012) The bank guarantees amount to 664 million euros and are a key step for the beginning of the Haramain High Speed Railway Phase II, which was signed on 14th January 2012.

The issue has been made under a syndicated frame agreement of international guarantees signed through a multijurisdictional approach and which has come to fruition with its presentation to the Saudi Railways Organization, the Saudi Arabia rail administration.

Project
The High Speed Mecca-Jeddah-Medina Railway Link project includes the design and construction of the superstructure and railway systems, the supply of 36 high-speed trains designed for speeds of over 300 km/h and an option to purchase a further 23 trains during the operation and maintenance period, as well as the operation and maintenance of the line for a period of twelve years with an option to renew.
