RIFT Valley Railways (RVR), the consortium operating Kenya and Uganda's railways, has announced a $US 62m investment plan to buy new wagons and to rehabilitate its existing fleet.

THE SPANISH government is expected to vote at the end of this month on draft legislation that could bring sweeping liberalisation of the rail market within a year together with the privatisation of Renfe.

ITALY's rail regulator (URSF) has ruled in favour of Italian Rail Network (RFI) in a dispute with open-access high-speed operator NTV over the recent erection of a fence at Rome Ostiense which prevents NTV passengers walking directly from NTV's lounge to their train on the adjacent platform 15.
However, the regulator has ordered a hole to be cut in a fence further up the platform, which was erected in 2000, so that passengers and the public can gain direct access to the platform from the street.

Regulator consults on proposals to formalise the Rail Delivery Group

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) today launched a consultation on proposals aimed at formalising the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), the rail leadership body established in June 2011 to drive forward change across Britain’s railways.

RDG brings together the owners of Britain's train operating companies, freight operating companies and Network Rail. The group was set up in response to the call by the ‘Rail Value for Money Study’, chaired by Sir Roy McNulty, for the rail industry to provide leadership in reducing the costs and improving the efficiency of the railways.

Over the past year RDG has focused on identifying priorities towards achieving value for money, establishing cross-industry working groups to take forward proposals to deliver improvements for passengers and taxpayers. ORR is seeking views on proposals to introduce new licence conditions - developed with RDG - which would formalise the group’s role, governance arrangements, and funding.
