Westermo, a subsidiary of Beijer Electronics, has won a SEK30m ($4.27m) order from Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in the US to deliver IP communication solutions for 364 rail cars.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has started a project to capture breaking energy from subway cars and trains on the Market-Frankford Line and supply it back to the regional electric grid.

US-based freight transport firm BNSF Railway (BNSF) is planning to invest $92m in Oklahoma during 2012 for railway maintenance, capacity improvements and expansion projects.

Ukrainian Railway’s Dnieper division is to fit 500 locomotives with satellite tracking equipment to help improve the management of freight services.
 
The Spanish government has formally transferred responsibility for the A Coruña – Vigo high speed line project from the Ministry of Development to ADIF, undertaking to service any debt that may be incurred. The project to build a connection in the Tarragona area between the Madrid – Barcelona high speed line and the Mediterranean Corridor (RG 5.12 p30) has also been transferred to the infrastructure authority.
 
On May 10 the US Federal Railroad Administration announced changes to PTC installation rules. Railways will no longer have to conduct risk analyses to obtain approval not to install PTC or ‘other costly risk mitigation measures’ on 16000 km of track that will not carry passenger trains or poison inhalation hazard commodities after December 2015. FRA estimates that this will save up to $775m over 20 years.
 
A new €3·8m station in Lamprechtshausen opened on May 11, extending Salzburger Lokalbahn services 300 m closer to the town centre.
 
Patriot Rail Corp’s Kingman Terminal Railroad subsidiary is to provide rail services at the Kingman Airport & Industrial Park in Mohave County, Arizona, under a 22-year agreement. Local funding has been allocated for a feasibility study into the introduction of a commuter service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

40,000 households and businesses updated on proposed Northern line extension

Residents and businesses in the Vauxhall Nine Elms area are being sent leaflets to update them on the proposed Northern line extension, including plans to create two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station.
