A proposed new nationwide traffic management system for the UK's trains could
enhance the efficiency of the network.
This is the claim made by Network
Rail, which has awarded contracts for the design and development of the solution
to Hitachi Rail Europe, joint venture Signalling Solutions and Thales
UK.
According to the infrastructure group, the technology "forms an
integral part of our operating strategy" and will bring together the 800 signal
boxes across the country in 14 rail operating centres.
The process of
consolidating operations is expected to take 30 years and to reduce running
costs for rail by £250 million a year, cut delays and deliver more accurate
information when fully implemented.
A rollout of the jointly developed
traffic management software is expected to commence in 2014 and Network Rail's
managing director of network operations Robin Gisby stated: "Our focus is on
developing a system which meets the needs of Network Rail, our customers and
passengers, helping deliver a leaner, more efficient and reliable
railway."
Network Rail has also invested in a new Where Am I? smartphone
app to connect helicopters with engineers and emergency services in order to
improve emergency response times.
