Train companies are today providing significant amounts of extra capacity to get hundreds of thousands of spectators to Olympics events and home again.
• Train companies are providing 565,276 extra seats and over 4.1 million seats in total today.
• Nearly 434,000 spectators have now taken advantage of the special 2012 Games Train Tickets, which will remain on sale throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.
The Transport Co-Ordination Centre, set up specifically for the 2012 Games, keeps transport operators informed of each other’s plans and how people are using the public transport system, and helps operators provide passengers with the most up-to-date travel information.
Over the Olympics, rail users are advised to plan ahead before travelling by visiting the Get Ahead of the Games website and to give themselves plenty of extra time to get to their final destination.
An ATOC spokesman said: “As Team GB’s haul of gold clocks up, millions of spectators have been using the train to get to Olympic events and back home again, from early in the morning through to well after midnight. Thanks to all our passengers for planning ahead, staggering journeys and avoiding busy stations where possible.”
Over the Olympics, the railway has been running millions of additional seats and achieving high level of punctuality and reliability. In the past week, the daily average punctuality and reliability of national rail services has been: Wednesday 1 August - 93.7%; Thursday 2 August - 93.9%; Friday 3 August – 94.1%; Saturday 4 August – 93.5%; Sunday 5 August – 93.8%; Monday 6 August – 94.3% Tuesday 7 August – 93.4%
As at midday today, 95% of services were running to schedule across the network.
To get the latest real-time rail travel information, passengers should use the National Rail Enquiries (NRE) service, paid for and run by train companies, which they can access on the move.
