UK Office of Rail Regulation (ORR)
The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published statistics highlighting year-on-year levels of government financial support to the rail industry (1985-86 to 2011-12).
Statistics show that in 2011-12 the rail industry received a £3.9bn government subsidy – the seventh year in a row that government support has declined. Government support reached its peak in 2006-07 when the rail industry received just under £6.31bn.
Data also highlights that 2011-12 is the second year that the government received money back from various train operating companies as part of their franchise agreement. In 2011-12, the government received £133m. The previous year the government received £51m.
ORR has also today published safety data, including statistics on passenger and worker injuries, fatalities and suicides.
To view these statistics, visit ORR's National Rail Trends (NRT) Portal at: http://dataportal.orr.gov.uk
The NRT Portal – which now has over 1,800 subscribers - gives everyone access to a wide range of rail statistics throughout the year. The NRT Portal holds information in one place and is easy to navigate. New data is uploaded onto the Portal each month.
