Magnetically suspended vehicles - the dream and the reality Lecture: 17 October 2012, London
by Roger Goodall - Loughborough University
Professor Roger M Goodall MA, PhD, FREng, FIMechE, FIET
Professor of Control Systems Engineering
- Free event -
The technology of Magnetically Suspended Vehicles (Maglev) is now 50 years old and yet exploitation remains minimal, despite the expectations arising from the initial dreams.
The lecture will weave together the speaker’s own research involvement in the subject since the 1970s with an overview of what else has been done and achieved.
It will provide a technical and historical appraisal, starting with the expected features believed in the early days to characterise the benefits of Maglev, outlining the various manifestations of the technology and reviewing the actual achievements against the initial expectations, i.e. to assess the viability of the original dream.
The speaker will offer a commentary on the present day barriers and opportunities, and present some suggestions for R&D emphasis looking to the future.

This was the KA942 from Mainline steam doing a photo stop. The trip was the return journey from Greymouth to Christchurch over Arthurs Pass on 2 September 2012. Sorry about the windy noise but it was windy and the hum of KA overcame the noise of the wind.
