New passenger journey statistics published by ORR

13 September 2012
Over 360 million passenger journeys took place on Great Britain’s railways in Q1 2012-13 (1 April- 30 June) - 14 million more than the same period last year - show new statistics published today by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR).
Latest passenger usage figures highlight that:
  • The number of passenger journeys rose by 5.4% on London and South East rail services compared with the same quarter in 2011-12, with over 246 million passenger journeys in 2012-13 Q1.
  • Passenger journey numbers on regional rail services increased by 0.4% to nearly 82 million, and increased on long distance services by 4.1% to 31.5 million in 2012-13 Q1 compared with the same quarter last year.
  • The total number of kilometres travelled by rail passengers in Q1 2012-13 was 14.4 billion kilometres – 0.4 billion kilometres more than in the same quarter in 2011-12.
  • Passenger kilometres on London and South East franchised operators increased by 4.5% to 6.7 billion passenger kilometres, and on long distance services by 2.9% to 4.9 billion passenger kilometres compared with the equivalent quarter last year. Passenger kilometres on franchised regional operators decreased by 0.3% to 2.7 billion passenger kilometres compared to Q1 last year.
Data published today also recaps on annual figures for 2011-12. In 2011-12, 1.46 billion passenger journeys took place on Great Britain’s railways.
