SWISS intermodal operator Hupac is counting the cost of the reduced economic demand, disruptions to traffic on Switzerland's Gotthard Line, and high competitive pressures from road, which collectively contributed to a 10.7% decrease in lorry trailers and swapbodies carried last year to 646,214 units.

CHANNEL Tunnel operator Eurotunnel says it had a record year in 2012 with a 14% increase in turnover to €993.1m. Passenger traffic breached the 300 million mark in October 2012 since the tunnel opened in 1994.

THE Association of Hungarian Logistics Service Centres (MLSZKSZ) has completed a feasibility study for the so-called V0 railway, which would allow international freight traffic to bypass congested lines in the Budapest area.

GERMANY's first open-access long-distance operator Hamburg-Köln-Express (HKX) is celebrating its first six months of operation with a week of discounted tickets and the "fastest music festival in Germany", with musicians travelling on the train and performing 120-second sets during stops at stations.

Alstom to install signalling systems on Treviglio-Brescia high-speed line in Italy Alstom, as a member of the Saturno consortium, has won a €20m contract from Italian railway infrastructure company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) to supply part of the signalling system, and design and install railway infrastructure for a high-speed rail link between Treviglio and Brescia, Italy. 
      
Balfour Beatty Rail wins Crossrail track upgrade contract in UK
Balfour Beatty Rail has secured a contract from Network Rail to upgrade a 12-mile stretch of the Great Western Main Line (GWML) between West Drayton and Maidenhead in the UK for future Crossrail operations. 
      
Norfolk Southern opens intermodal terminal facility in Pennsylvania
Norfolk Southern (NS) has opened a new $97m rail-truck terminal in Greencastle, South Central Pennsylvania, US, marking the company's third Crescent Corridor intermodal facility.
       
BNSF to increase capital investment to $4.1bn in 2013
BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) has unveiled plans to invest $4.1bn on capital expenditures (CAPEX) in 2013, an increase of $450m (11%) compared to the 2012 capital spending budget of $3.6bn.
