The €307m line covers 8.1 km from Benabdelmalek to Zouaghi, with 10 stops and will carry around 70,000 passengers per day operating between 05:00 and 23:00 each day. During peak periods trains will operate at three-minute intervals, and 5 minutes off-peak. Operating speed will be around 70 km per hour (43 mph).

Civil works for the new line were the responsibility of Pizzarotti, Italy, with Alstom supplying 27 Citadis LRVs, and track, power and operating systems.

The consortium, which will operate and maintain the line for the first 10 years, is named Setram, and comprises French company RATP Dev, Algiers Metro Enterprise, and Algiers Urban and Suburban Public Transport Enterprise.

The consortium has hired and trained around 500 local staff, developed operating procedures, maintenance policies and conducted operating trials.

Turkey Set to Become Global Hub for Rail Manufacturing Says Report

Turkey is set to become a global hub for rail manufacturing over the coming decade, according to a report just published.

Turkey’s strategic location places it central to infrastructure projects from North Africa, the Middle East and Europe, says analysis from Frost and Sullivan Rail Outlook Study 2013.

While European projects have stalled due to economic difficulties, rail networks in Africa and the Middle East are due to double in size by 2022. General Electric has invested in over $114 million in technology transfers to build powerhaul locomotives in Turkey.

Major trends in infrastructure and operating developments include the drive for efficiency, which will lead to the adoption of remote sensing, passenger information and planning systems being developed and upgraded.

Demand for high-speed InterCity and international services will be strong with Asia aiming for overnight links from Europe to Asia via Istanbul by 2030.

China has benefited from technology transfers from European countries and is expected to double its rail network to a track length of 120,000 km by 2020. Long-term projects to link the markets of the Far East with European markets will speed up change in the sector.
The largest infrastructure projects in Turkey will relate to electrification and track upgrades.
