ORR publishes data on government financial support to the rail industry

    22 August 2013
The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published statistics highlighting year-on-year levels of government financial support to the rail industry (1985-86 to 2012-13).

Statistics show that in 2012-13 the rail industry received a £5.1bn government subsidy, this is £524 million greater than the previous year. The subsidy includes £1,536 million of spending on major rail projects such as Crossrail – a rise of £828 million on the previous year.

Data also highlights that 2012-13 is the third successive year that the government received money back from train operating companies as part of their franchise agreement. In 2012-13, the government received £420m.

To view these statistics, visit ORR's National Rail Trends (NRT) Portal at: http://dataportal.orr.gov.uk
The NRT Portal – which now has over 2,500 subscribers - gives everyone access to a wide range of rail statistics throughout the year. The NRT Portal holds information in one place and is easy to navigate. New data is uploaded onto the Portal each month.

    Top 30 passenger experience innovations

What are the top 30 passenger experience innovations of recent times?
Passenger experience is one of the primary advantages railways tend to advertise over airlines. Rather than cram into tiny seats without access to your electronic devices, rail offers the chance to stretch out over a table, purchase food at your leisure and take advantage of on-board Wi-Fi to get on with work or play.

With this in mind, we’ve put together this e-book exploring the top 30 things that, in our opinions, make rail an agreeable option for travellers.

    Get the E-Book to hear:
    • Some of the greatest and not so great innovations in passenger experience
    • How rail companies have utilised and successfully implemented these innovations
    • Why making the passenger experience should be priority
    • Rants and raves both positive and negative
