Stoke and Shropshire companies want some of the HS2 action... and homeowners adversely affected by the line's route are encouraged to seek compensation....

International Union of Railways (UIC) issues 2014 annual report on Railway Accidents in Europe
(Paris, 17 October 2014)
The International Union of Railways (UIC) issued its annual report on Railway Accidents in Europe. The UIC Safety Database has been collecting data since 2001 and now contains data from 21 European UIC member railways. 4.1 billion train-kilometers in the year 2013 were operated on the networks, carrying 7.2 billion passengers and 0.9 billion tons of freight.
The database, managed by the UIC Safety Unit, aims to create an inventory of information containing not only accident statistics, but comprehensive detail about causes, circumstances and consequences of accidents.
Rail Transport is the safest land transport mode and continuously improves its safety. By comparison, "CARE" (the official road accidents database at DG MOVE) shows that about 26,000 road fatalities occurred in the EU 27 during the year 2013.
The efforts of the UIC Safety Database Members to optimise the safety level in all fields of railway operation have led to a 20% decrease in fatalities since 2009.

UIC HIGHSPEED 2015
Celebrate the past, Design the future
7-10 July 2015, Tokyo
7-10 July 2015, Tokyo
The Congress is being coordinated by East Japan Railway Company in collaboration with all parties involved in high speed rail in Japan, and more generally with all UIC member railways.
This is the world’s most important meeting for high-speed rail, and is expected to attract more than 1,000 attendees from across the globe to exchange views on the development and achievements of high-speed rail worldwide.
The World Congress will feature international rail experts on transportation policy and technology. It will bring the public and private sectors together to provide insight and identify best practices for implementing high-speed rail projects at every stage - from planning, financing, and construction, to operations and management. Also, the Congress will feature an exhibit showcasing high-speed rail products and services.

News from UITP - Advancing Public Transport
Moscow’s Transport Development Programme recently extended its 2012–2016 Transport Development Programme until 2020 in a bid to address the issues of increasing traffic congestion, and pollution...
For example, Moscow Metro, which transports 2.8bn passengers per year plans to construct 77 new lines and stations, purchase 3,500 new carriages on the basis of a ‘contract of life cycle,’ improve access for disabled passengers at all stations, improve the ticket and tariff system as well as extending the range of Wi-Fi coverage in the metro.
And plans are also underway to build and develop 240km of additional railway lines, the reconstruction of nine railway stations as well as the renewal of rolling stock.....
In Delhi, the metro network - 190km - is carrying 1.7 million passengers per day...but to regain "its charm" this report suggests more buses to combat the ever increasing rise in motor car use.....
According to the report, " a developed country is not where the poor have cars, but where the rich use public transport"!
