International & UK Railway News Sunday 26th October 2014

The headline High Speed 2 railway would cost one-third less if built in France isn't the sort of news you'd want to spread, is it? And then suggest that there should be an HS3? The phrase "fatally flawed" has been used by some on HS2 routing and the new Crewe hub....(Mind you...France's TGVs may be running slower than intended...)
How much longer will Northern passengers have to endure "nodding donkeys"...the affectionate term for bus based Pacer DMUs?
Putting the clocks back overnight meant that Network Rail engineers could get in an extra hour's worth of work on maintenance and key projects like London bridge station..
And Crossrail tunnels on.......

Stunning night shot of a Network Rail engineer working on track near London Bridge station, with the Shard lit up in the background.

Network Rail is rebuilding London Bridge station as part of the £6.5bn Thameslink Programme that will increase capacity on one of Europe's busiest rail routes.

To keep the station open for business and minimise the impact on the 117 million people a year who use the station, or pass through it to Charing Cross and Cannon Street, much of the work is completed at night when no trains are running.

Crossrail Tunnelling: TBM Ellie breaks through into Victoria Dock Portal

Crossrail’s train tunnels in Docklands and southeast London are now structurally complete, following the breakthrough by tunnel machine Ellie at Victoria Dock Portal in east London. Tunnel machine Ellie had one of Crossrail’s shortest but most complex drives, 900m from Limmo Peninsula, near Canning Town, to Victoria Dock Portal. Ellie successfully navigated the Docklands Light Railway, Jubilee line and utilities, all in close proximity to the River Thames and River Lea. She completes a set of Crossrail tunnels in east and southeast London that stretch from Plumstead to Whitechapel, with an additional spur between Stepney Green and Stratford. It is Ellie’s second drive, having already completed a 2.7km stretch from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green. She will now be dismantled and returned to manufacturer Herrenknecht, with the parts recycled for future projects. Each of Crossrail’s eight tunnel boring machines weighs 1,000 tonnes, are 150m long and 7.1m in diameter. They are staffed by teams of 20 working around the clock. Crossrail’s eastern tunnels are built by Dragados Sisk Joint Venture. For more information visit: http://www.crossrail.co.uk/news/artic... http://www.crossrail.co.uk/

Behind the Hoardings: Constructing Whitechapel station platform tunnels

Whitechapel is one of Crossrail’s most ambitious new stations but it is also one of the most challenging, with a raft of improvements being delivered in a tightly constrained and highly populated area. Over the past three years, a team of around 250 people have been working 24/7 to create around 1 kilometre of new platforms and passageways for the new station. The work being carried out here is hugely impressive and will deliver massive benefits to the area, driving economic growth and regeneration for years to come. When Crossrail opens in 2018, up to 24 Crossrail trains per hour will operate in each direction between Paddington and Whitechapel during peak times, in addition to the existing London Underground and London Overground services. The new Crossrail services will help ease overcrowding on existing rail services and will support economic growth in the surrounding area, as Whitechapel becomes an important interchange on the Crossrail route. Journey times from Whitechapel to Heathrow Airport will be only 39 minutes, whilst Whitechapel to Canary Wharf will be reduced to just 3 minutes. For more information about our works at Whitechapel, visit: http://www.crossrail.co.uk/route/stat... http://www.crossrail.co.uk/

Crossrail Tunnelling: Completion of running tunnels in Docklands & southeast London

Crossrail's Programme Director, Simon Wright gives an overview of the tunnelling milestones reached so far and the challenges that lie ahead. Crossrail’s train tunnels in Docklands and southeast London are now structurally complete, following the breakthrough by tunnel machine Ellie at Victoria Dock Portal in east London. Tunnel machine Elizabeth has started the final push west from Whitechapel that will see her and sister machine Victoria complete Crossrail’s train tunnels at Farringdon next year. Tunnel machine Elizabeth is 60% through Crossrail’s longest drive, a distance of 8.3km from Limmo to Farringdon. She has already successfully negotiated Canary Wharf Crossrail station and Stepney Green cavern, before waiting in Whitechapel ahead of the completion of a shaft beneath Durward Street. The drive to Farringdon will reach the deepest point on the Crossrail route, approximately 40m beneath street level near the Barbican in the City of London. Each of Crossrail’s eight tunnel boring machines weighs 1,000 tonnes, is up to 150 metres long and 7.1 metres in diameter. They are staffed by teams of 20 working around the clock. Crossrail’s eastern tunnels are built by Dragados Sisk Joint Venture. Crossrail’s eight tunnel boring machines are undertaking 10 separate drives to construct a total 42km of tunnel. Crossrail began tunnelling in May 2012 when the first tunnel machine, Phyllis, launched from Royal Oak in west London. Six of Crossrail’s eight tunnel machines have now completed their journeys under London.
