How ironic that a lorry bearing the legend "We Fit", didn't ,when it came to an overhead railway bridge!
Railway resilience continues to challenge the engineers. Taunton-Castle Cary line is undergoing flood defence reinforcement...And the Keymer Junction in Sussex has been replaced...

UITP takes a close look at "The Ascent of  Cities".. and asks..."How are city authorities going to cope with such rapid growth? How must public transport be adapted, adopted or integrated to city planning to make sure growing numbers don’t make cities grind to a halt, leading to social unrest and economic stagnation?"

And an article that shows that the Shinkansen has made a small country even smaller...

Network Rail engineers have successfully replaced a crucial railway junction in Sussex over the first of four weekends of improvement work to the railway between London and Brighton.

Keymer Junction, near Wivelsfield, is where lines from Eastbourne and Lewes meet those running from Brighton to London. It’s the first time it has been renewed in almost 40 years and will provide more reliable journeys and a more comfortable ride for the growing number of passengers on the line.
It’s the first full weekend of four where major work is taking place on the route and buses are replacing trains between Three Bridges and Brighton / Lewes.
Steve Knight, area director for Network Rail, said: “Replacing an entire junction is a big job in itself, but it is just part of the work we are doing on the Brighton Main Line this autumn.
“We are also improving drainage through a tunnel, replacing another junction near Haywards Heath, and we are improving signalling near Balcombe. All of these upgrades will mean a better, more reliable railway.
“The scale of the work means we have had to use buses to replace trains and Southern and Thameslink staff have been doing a great job of helping people travel between London and Brighton while we are doing the work.”
Work will continue to take place on the main line on the weekends of October 11, 12; October 18, 19 and November 15 and 16.

Crude-by-rail shipments to drive Canadian Pacific’s revenue growth, COO says • 4:44 PM Carl Surran, SA News Editor

  • About a third of Canadian Pacific Railway's (NYSE:CP) targeted revenue growth over the next four years will be driven by crude-by-rail shipments, as the railroad focuses on improving its oil-loading terminals and track in western Canada, COO Keith Creel tells WSJ.
  • The transport of heavy crude from Alberta will soon account for ~60% of all of CP's oil revenues, with light crude from the Bakken region in Saskatchewan and North Dakota accounting for the balance, Creel says; Bakken-sourced oil currently accounts for ~60% of CP’s oil revenue.
  • CP’s bet on crude-by-rail underscores the growing interdependence between the oil and rail industries as North American oil and gas production booms; the amount of crude moving by rail in Canada has quadrupled since 2012 and is expected to continue to surge.

October focus: The ascent of cities
Over 2.5 million people cross the famous white stripes of the world’s most crowded intersection – Tokyo’s Shibuya Crossing - every day. Meanwhile in Bangladesh, traffic stands still for more than seven hours a day in the capital Dhaka. More than half a million cars use the stretch of road from Windsor to Quebec, King's Highway 401, daily, while 200 million city dwellers, headed home to China’s provinces for New Year were left stranded at train stations and roads after heavy snowfall in January this year.
We’re in the grip of a population explosion, and nowhere is it more evident than in cities.
Cities cover only 2% of the world’s surface, and yet they are home to approximately 54% of the earth’s population. In 1960 that figure was 34%, according to the WHO. By 2050, it’s set to be 70%.

Planning for growth to avoid unrest, stagnation

Most of the world’s fastest growing cities can be found in the developing world. 560 million people currently live in urban areas in China (and only 1% breathe air that is considered safe by the European Union), while about 70% of Indians live in rural areas - though about 10 million people move to cities each year. There are now over 50 Indian cities home to at least one million people, according to Allianz. Africa’s fastest growing city, Bamako, is located in one of the world’s poorest country’s, Mali, which comes 182nd in the UN’s human development ranking of 188 countries.

Growing urbanisation is already causing major disruption

How are city authorities going to cope with such rapid growth? How must public transport be adapted, adopted or integrated to city planning to make sure growing numbers don’t make cities grind to a halt, leading to social unrest and economic stagnation?
This month across our online media we’ll be concentrating on cities that are currently undergoing rapid population growth. We’ll be tackling the stories from an urban mobility-focussed perspective, and we’ll be including a running series of articles by young people from fast-growing cities all around the world.
