We made sure that passengers using the lines between East Croydon and London Bridge experienced no disruptions over the past week whilst a new bridge was being launched overhead.
Tennison Road Bridge is due to open for public use in Spring 2015.
The new road bridge was launched across 10 operational rail lines that form the main lines into London Bridge at Tennison Road, Norwood Junction in South London commencing on Saturday 6th December 2014.
Network Rail and its contractor, GRAHAM Construction, are midway through a project to replace the original bridge with a bigger, better structure. The new bridge will have wider footways and carriageway.
The original Tennison Road Bridge has spanned the main lines between London Bridge and East Croydon since 1922. The new bridge was launched into position using a hydraulic strand jack system.
Network Rail's Scheme Project Manager, ShaneO'Connor said: "By using technology and engineering expertise we were able to keep trains running and passengers travelling while we undertook what would otherwise have required a complete closure of the railway whilst the bridge was being launched”.
"It's a great step forward for Network Rail and it's also a big leap forward for Croydon, as it will soon have a much improved bridge with extended paths and a wider road."
Rory McFadden, Project Manager for GRAHAM Construction, said: "GRAHAM are delighted to have reached this major milestone on the replacement of the Tennison Road Bridge. Launching a 565 tonne bridge over 10 operational rail lines is quite a feat of engineering but the innovative methods used allowed for a controlled and safe installation. That said it took a lot of preparation in advance of the actual launch. GRAHAM would also like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support.”

Secretary Anthony Foxx’s 30-Year Plan: Vision for the Future for our Nation’s Transportation System
On Monday, January 12, 2015, don’t miss Transportation Secretary Foxx as he unveils the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) comprehensive framework for addressing the country’s long-term transportation needs. Technological and demographic changes may soon fundamentally alter demands on our transportation infrastructure. This conversation tackles the growing mobility and infrastructure challenges of a growing nation.
This session complements two additional sessions addressing priorities and key issues developed by the USDOT: one that addresses rulemaking efforts to promote safety across all transportation modes and another that discusses efforts to increase access to reliable, safe, and affordable transportation options.
The TRB 94th Annual Meeting, January 11-15, 2015, in Washington, D.C., covers all transportation modes, with more than 5,000 presentations in more than 750 sessions addressing topics of interest to all attendees—policymakers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions. The Annual Meeting, which draws attendees from throughout the United States and from 70 countries, is the single largest gathering of transportation practitioners and researchers in the world.
