Manchester Victoria station’s Metrolink stop to reopen in February
Network Rail will restore services to Manchester Victoria’s Metrolink stop next month after completing work to build new platforms and tracks.
The tram stop upgrade is part of the redevelopment of Manchester Victoria station which is being delivered as part of a £1bn+ investment in the railway in the north west of England.
The redesigned and expanded Metrolink stop will ultimately allow more frequent tram services to run through the iconic city centre station as well as providing better links with the national rail network.
Network Rail will complete the work between Saturday 14 February and Saturday 21 February which involve changes to tram services through the station.
Details of the specific changes will be provided by Metrolink and TfGM at stops and online at www.tfgm.com and www.metrolink.co.uk.
Ian Joslin, area director for Network Rail, said: “The completion of and reopening of the tram stop at Manchester Victoria is a milestone in the redevelopment of the station. To allow us to complete the work, there will be changes to tram services between 14 and 21 February and we apologise for that.
“However the result will ultimately be a better tram service with better connections to the railway as part of the stunning new Manchester Victoria station.”
Peter Cushing, TfGM’s Metrolink director, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming our customers back on-board at Victoria as the station’s wider redevelopment enters its final stages.
“We’ve been working closely with Network Rail to ensure this important stop reopens as soon as possible because, although there will still be a lot of construction activity in the station when that happens, it will restore key services and connections for passengers.
“There will be changes to services in the run up to the re-opening – during the traditionally quieter half-term period – and we’ll be publicising these as widely as possible.
“With such a major programme of improvements across the Metrolink system at the moment, we’re grateful for people’s patience and this is reflected in the decision to freeze Metrolink fares this year.”
The Metrolink network as a whole is benefiting from a £1.5 billion investment in new lines, new trams and stop improvements, and Manchester Victoria is a key part of the network-wide upgrade.
The Manchester Victoria Metrolink stop works and associated enhancements are being funded by the Greater Manchester Transport Fund and European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013.

Passengers reminded to check before they travel as work to improve the railway between London and Norwich continues
Essential improvements to provide a better, more reliable railway for passengers between London and Norwich will take place over eight weekends from the end of January to the middle of March affecting services at Colchester, Witham, Chelmsford and Marks Tey.
Upgrades worth £15m will start on the weekend of Saturday January 31 and Sunday February 1 and continues for eight weekends until Sunday March 22nd.
Abellio Greater Anglia will run a planned bus service for passengers to keep people moving on the affected sections of the line as the vital upgrades takes place.
Network Rail route managing director, Richard Schofield, said: “This investment is absolutely vital to help us deliver a better service for passengers. We know that people want to travel by train and not a bus, but the line from London Liverpool Street to Norwich carries a huge amount of traffic and desperately needs this boost.
“The project will deliver a more consistent and reliable service for passengers who travel on this line. We would like to thank passengers in advance for bearing with us over these weekends as it will mean some changes to their travel plans.”
Jamie Burles, Managing Director, Abellio Greater Anglia said: "Although there is never a good time for such engineering works, this investment by Network Rail will help in our joint objective to deliver more consistent train service performance on our mainline. We will be doing all we can to minimise inconvenience to passengers during the course of these works. In addition to Network Rail's investment in the infrastructure, we are also investing over £30m in the current short franchise to improve customer service, train cleaning and rolling stock, including £9m in the project now underway to upgrade our intercity Mark III carriages."
Work will be carried out at the following locations:
In 2015, there are currently no plans for any major disruptive engineering work on the main line out of Liverpool Street to Norwich beyond May to the end of the year that would require a bus replacement service during weekends on both days.
On January 3, Network Rail started to upgrade the track between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. It is currently renewing the track foundations between Norwich and Stowmarket as part of an overall investment of £170m on this line in 2015.

Work will be carried out at the following locations:
- Colchester: Engineers are returning to Colchester for the second part of this project, which will see more than two kilometres of track installed on this stretch of the route. The current track is more than 30 years old at both Colchester and Witham
- Witham: Network Rail is installing new track and points at Witham. Points allow trains to move from one part of the track to another.
- Chelmsford: Engineers continue to upgrade the overhead lines to improve reliability along the Great Eastern Main Line.
- Marks Tey: Network Rail is installing new points at Marks Tey, which allows trains to travel from the main line to Sudbury.
