Michael Portillo takes to the tracks with a copy of George Bradshaw's Victorian Railway Guidebook. In a series of five epic journeys, Portillo travels the length and breadth of the country to see how the railways changed us, and what of Bradshaw's Britain remains.
Following the route of the Great Eastern Line, which ventures from the edge of East Anglia to the centre of the country's financial capital, London, Michael visits Essex to discover why dairy herds travelled there by rail from all over the country in the nineteenth century. He also visits Waltham Cross to see how the gunpowder made there fuelled the building of an empire, and heads to Hackney to uncover the gruesome details of the first murder on a train.

Epping Ongar Railway's GER Holden F5 steam locomotives. (Yanamation on YouTube)
This video is about BR / LNER / GER M15 2-4-2T Holden F5 steam locomotives which brings you the memories of these obsoleted steam locos, Holden F5 were the steam locos which they served Epping and Ongar Railway for many years ago, both Holden F5 and F4s' nickname were "Gobblers", sadly, the last F5 was withdrawn in 1958, so none of them survive. As the former Great Eastern Railway and London Underground's Epping Ongar Railway branch was closed in 1994, the Epping Ongar Railway preservation society trust decide to reopen the railway as a preserved railway, which is currently operate by EOR's Class 117 DMU. The railway hope the Holden F5 Trust will rebuilt the Holden F5 replica for the railway, and we will once again see the F5 steam engine operate the Epping Ongar steam Railway.
The original background music of this video is "The Island Song" from Thomas the Tank engine & friends, but some viewers claimed the music was not appropriate to my video, so I audioswapped to a music called "Greensleeves".
