ATOC research shows that journeys using the Disabled Persons Railcard (launched in 1981, and offering nearly a third off most ticket prices) totalled 3.5million, up nearly 3 times from the 1997 level.

And the cost of car ownership and travel is encouraging more young people to take the train.
ATOC figures show that increasing numbers of young people have a 16-25 Railcard and their journeys have increased by 60% since 2007.
