72 Days to Railfest 2012! 22nd March 2012
72 Days to go....
1872
The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) A1 Class 0-6-0T was designed by William Stroudley. 50 of the class were built in 1872 and between 1874 and 1880 at Brighton Works.
After being displaced from work out of London Victoria and London Bridge, many were used on branch operations in Sussex....and some famously worked the Hayling Island Branch until closure in 1963.
The most famous survivor of the "Terriers" is No 55, Stepney, which was the first locomotive on the preservation "Bluebell Railway" in 1960.
Stepney and "Greenbell" haul the two Mets and Obo up Freshfield Bank during the Bluebell's Winter Steam-Up Gala in February 1999.(C) David Haggar on Steam Tube
