Tel Aviv Light Rail Six Years Behind Schedule

A new 2 line light railway system for Tel Aviv, originally expected to be completed in 2017, is 6 years behind schedule, according to a report by Globes Business News Service.

Project auditors, Dutch firm Aegis, told the Finance Ministry in an internal report that commissioning of the Red Line will not be ready before 2023, with the Green Line operable in 2020, at the earliest. The project is believed to have exceeded its initial budget by NIS 3 billion.

The government firm responsible for the infrastructure blames cost overruns on issues with the project timetable, which it says are still subject to discussions with the Auditor.
While NIS 600 million is due to a rise in the Consumer Price Index, neither the Finance Ministry nor NTA is commenting on a gap in the cost of the project or the delay to the timetable.

The Tel Aviv light rail project was originally a build-operate-transfer project, which failed to secure finance. The government handed the project over to NTA, a government company, and will now only say that the company is moving forward on the planning of the Red Line and that planning concepts have been reviewed by an auditor on behalf of the Ministries of Finance and Transport, which recommended them.

SRO President Addresses 82nd General Assembly of the International Union of Railways

Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO) President Muhammad Al-Suwaiket addressed the 82nd general meeting assembly of the International Union of Railways (UIC) held in Paris last week.
His address spoke of the growing global importance of the railway system in the Kingdom, linking the countries of the GCC in the region. He also noted the role of the UIC in providing a forum for the exchange of experiences and supporting companies and organisations through its funding of research and projects.

Al-Suwaiket was welcomed to the presidency of the SRO by the general assembly, and encouraged the SRO to take an active role in strategic meetings of the UIC. The UIC Director General invited SRO to share the organisation’s experience of high-speed rail through the Haramain High Speed Rail Project with the group of High Speed Rail Countries at the executive and operational level.
More than 80 countries and organisations attended the meeting of the General Assembly. Discussions included standardisation, interoperability and connecting remaining countries of the region. A number of workshops are being arranged during 2013-14 to share issues and problems and mutually benefit from experience in each country. SRO will contribute its technical experience in the implementation of expansion projects and support in terms of training, maintenance and operations.
