Russian Railways sets up high-speed rail project office "Moscow - Kazan"

Alexander Misharin, First Vice-President of Russian Railways, will lead the new high-speed rail project office "Moscow - Kazan", which will also be staffed by Company vice-presidents and senior managers responsible for finance and economics, passenger transport development, infrastructure operation and organising transportation process, innovational development, construction and cooperation with the authorities and training etc.

The project office will also coordinate the development of the design parameters and mechanisms for its implementation, the development of technical, technological and information solutions used in the construction and operation of high-speed rail and proposals for relevant research.
The next step will be to conduct an open tender for a contract to perform engineering surveys and develop the project documentation for the construction of the Moscow - Kazan section of the Moscow - Kazan - Yekaterinburg high-speed main line in 2013-2014.

"The tender's winner must be decided before the end of 2013. We hope that in addition to Russian design institutes, major foreign design companies will also take part in the tender and bring to the project their experience in designing and organising the construction of similar high-speed railway lines in Europe and Asia and can help construct the line here in cooperation with Russian companies. Exchanging experience, training Russian staff to operate new technologies in design and developing Russia's human resources in advanced design technologies will have a positive impact on the development of the Russian Federation's infrastructure," said Alexander Misharin.

In preparation for the tender on 15 October 2015, a seminar dedicated to discussing the key aspects of the "Moscow - Kazan" high-speed rail project and the upcoming tender was held under the direction of Alexander Misharin. The seminar was attended by representatives of more than 50 Russian and foreign companies, including design, construction and engineering organisations.
Pre-feasibility studies have shown that the new 770 km railway line will require the construction of more than 340 man-made structures, as well as a number of non-standard bridges across the rivers Oka, Sura and Volga. The line will have about 800 intersections at different levels with infrastructure for other forms of transport.

Vice-President of Russian Railways Oleg Atkov takes part in Congress of International Union of Railway Medical Services

A delegation from Russian Railways led by Company Vice President Oleg Atkov attended the Congress of the International Union of Railway Medical Services (UIMC), which was held in Sydney in Australia from 8 to 11 October 2013.

The Congress, which brought together leading railway doctors from 14 countries, discussed issues such as standardising approaches to medical examinations and establishing uniform criteria for the medical examination of railway employees. Technical solutions for remote testing of locomotive crews to be tested for alcohol and drugs using intranets and the Internet were presented at the Congress.

A key theme was the psychological rehabilitation of railway employees who ensure train safety.
In his report, Oleg Atkov presented the experience of the Russian Railways in organising and developing mobile consultation and diagnostic centres (MCDCs), which are equipped with modern diagnostic and mobile telemedicine equipment. Known as "health trains," the MCDCs travel regularly to remote train stations and have become a project at national government level: in 2006, the team which developed the concept was awarded a science and technology prize by the Government of the Russian Federation.

The Congress considered, greatly appreciated the experience of Russian Railways in train medical safety and stressed the importance of common approaches to teaching railway medicine to doctors in accordance with certification standards for experts.

It is expected that the results of the Congress will be presented to the management companies of the participating countries and the European Commission.
The Congress concluded with a decision to hold the UIMC Congress in Russia in 2015.

IV International Conference "Next Station 2013" opens at Kazansky railway station in Moscow

Vladimir Yakunin, who is both President of Russian Railways and the Chairman of the International Union of Railways, and Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, Director General of the International Union of Railways, jointly opened the IV International Conference "Next Station 2013."

"Information cooperation and exchanging experience enables us to not just predict the future, but to create it - that, in my opinion, is the subtext of this conference's designation - "Next Station" - a concept of railway stations in the future, one to which we are striving in our work," said Vladimir Yakunin in his welcoming speech to the conference delegates.

Railway stations, according to the President of Russian Railways, are today becoming large intermodal passenger transport hubs, centres of gravity and redistribution points for passenger traffic, places where people can socialise and passengers are able to get a lot of extras. The development of train-station infrastructure is one of the strategic objectives for the Russian Railways, says Vladimir Yakunin.

And nowadays, in his opinion, it is necessary that stations increase their efficiency in terms of the development of society and industry.

For his part, Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, Director General of the International Union of Railways, also noted the role of stations as social centers:
"Stations are gradually evolving and becoming places where anyone, and not necessarily just passengers, can enjoy good meals or snacks, as well as a variety of other daily services."

The event was attended by the heads of railway companies in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia, experts in security and high tech and representatives from business, banking, architecture and culture.

The conference will consider all strategic issues involved in creating, developing and operating railway stations.
The event was organised by the Russian Railways jointly with the International Union of Railways.
