Who will reach the child alone on the busy platform station first?
    Who will reach Jamile first?

Every 5 minutes a child arrives at a railway station in India, often alone, hungry and vulnerable.

If you experience any problems viewing the above film, please click here to view on YouTube.

Many running away from poverty or abuse, they head to the big city in search of a better life. There is never a still second at Kolkata's Sealdah station, never a moment of pause amid the constant noise and friction of people and cargo in motion. Every day more than 120 trains come and go from the 15 platforms.

MeetJamileIt's somewhere street children can scrape a living, selling refilled water bottles to commuters or begging from passers-by. It's also a magnet for the pimps, drug pushers and ruthless traders who prey on young lives.
For children like Jamile, many end up begging, stealing or much worse. For children like Jamile, many end up begging, stealing or much worse. When you are helpless and alone a friendly face is a welcome sight. But while the first stranger you meet might seem kind, the truth is often very different.
    Help us reach them first

Ensuring we reach them first: Child Friendly Stations

Railway Children is acutely aware of the urgent need to make train stations safer places for children. Since 2008, we have been setting up 'child friendly' stations across India; working with local police, station vendors and porters to ensure they no longer see these children as a nuisance.

Our rescue workers are on the ground seeking out children before those who prey on their vulnerability can reach them.
Child protection boothRescue workers refer children to a 'child protection booth' on, or near, railway platforms, which are usually staffed by a volunteer or railway protection force officer. From here, children who have just arrived are referred to a drop-in centre where they are given food, clean clothes and medical care and can access longer-term help.access longer-term help.

SchoolingWe already have child protection booths in West Bengal and other Indian states. We are working to make Itarsi, Malda and Asansol safer stations with Rescue workers present and the education of local police, vendors and porters to look out for the children and ensure they are referred to the relevant services.

However we want to ensure all the stations are safe for children, therefore still need your support.
