Regulator publishes latest quarterly passenger complaints data

19 December 2013
The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published a new statistical release detailing the volume and focus of rail passenger complaints. There has been a decrease in the complaints rate this quarter compared to the same quarter last year.
The ‘Passenger Rail Service Satisfaction’ statistical release contains information on complaints from passengers on various aspects of rail services from 2002-03 up until 30 September 2013. Latest quarterly figures (from 1 July to 30 September 2013) show:
  • 36.6% of all complaints were about the punctuality and reliability of trains, and this category continues to have the highest number of complaints.
  • 10 train operating companies saw a decrease in their complaints rate compared to the same quarter last year. Nine train operators experienced an increase in their complaints rate.
This report is part of a series of quarterly and annual National Statistics offering context and commentary on the latest data trends. Quality reports are also available which give a detailed explanation of the methodology used in collecting the data.
The current methodology does not capture complaints received through social media platforms. ORR is exploring ways to include complaints through social media in the future and we are keen to hear views on raising concerns through social media. To join the debate, share views on Twitter at #openrail

ORR data shows sustained growth in rail freight usage

12 December 2013
The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published a new statistical release which highlights growth in Britain’s rail freight sector.
The 'Freight Rail Usage' statistical release contains information on rail freight in Great Britain covering the period from 1999-00 to 30 September 2013. Freight usage data provides a useful barometer of economic activity and is closely linked to other industries such as manufacturing and imports/exports. The data for 2013-14 Q2 (1 July 2013 to 30 Sep 2013), when compared to the same period last year, shows:
  • Britain’s rail network carried a greater amount of freight, with an 8.9% rise in freight moved to a total of 5.7bn net tonne kilometres.
  • The amount of coal moved increased by 15.6% to 2bn net tonne kilometres – accounting for 35.4% of total freight moved on the network.
  • Oil and petroleum, international and metal moved increased by 11.8%, 7.9% and 2.8% respectively.
This report is part of a series of quarterly and annual statistical releases which offer context and commentary on the latest data trends. To read the full report visit: http://www.rail-reg.gov.uk/server/show/nav.3016
Over the past decade ORR has supported an almost 10% increase in freight traffic on Britain’s rail network by allowing greater access for freight trains and by setting targets for Network Rail to deliver improved reliability. Plans for the railways between 2014 and 2019 include more than £12bn infrastructure investment which will help to bring further benefits for the rail freight industry.
