The attraction of getting from A to B in double quick time is very appealing , world wide.
Russian Railways has aspirations in this area, and we can read of a couple of projects planned....or hoped for.. below.

Woodland Matters is not too sure what the implications of  the "National Policy Statement (NPS) for National Road and Rail Networks" will be. And uncertainty seems to be affecting residents of Berwick, in the north, and Camden....at the heart of the proposed HS2 start point in London.

Any uncertainty regarding the Californian high  speed project will likely have been allayed by extra time being granted to raise funding.. but uncertainty would appear to be at the heart of concerns regarding the rail transit of dangerous loads after an under reported derailment in Westford, Mass., where fortunately, no one was injured.

And as  the 6 A4's say "The Great Good-Bye", why not spend a few pounds on a new magazine.. "The Great British Locomotives Collection "

High Speed Rail aspirations are also held by Russian Railways.
Read of the proposals for two particular stretches of high speed lines....

Project Profile
The first stage of the creation of high-speed railway services in the Russian Federation will be the construction of the Moscow to Kazan rail track of the HSL-2 link, which will run across the territory of 6 constituent entities of Russian Federation: Moscow and Moscow region, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod region, Tatarstan and Udmurtia. Subsequent development of the rail link includes its extension to Yekaterinburg.
The launch of the link will ensure a 4-fold reduction of the travel time between Moscow and Kazan: from the current 14 hours (on the existing railway infrastructure) down to 3.5 hours, whereas the travel time between Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan will be reduced by 7 times: from 10h 32m to 1h 37m. The Moscow-Kazan high-speed link will facilitate improvement of the degree of connection between the territories of Russia and the mobility of population; the average travel time between the capitals of the regions will be 1 hour.

Key Features of the Moscow-Kazan HSL Project:

  • Track length: 770 km
  • Travel time: 3 hours 3 minutes
  • Maximum speed: up to 400 kmph
  • Rail gauge: 1520 mm
  • Implementation scheme: PPP

Effects from Implementation of the Moscow-Kazan HSL Project:

Creation of new jobs: 80,000 new jobs will be created at the construction stage, thereof 80,000 jobs in associated industries (at the stage of operation: 30,000 jobs/15,000 jobs)
The Russian business will obtain orders totaling over RUB 274 billion for the purpose of the project — and that for the supply of construction products alone.

HSR 1 Project
Construction of the Moscow — St. Petersburg high-speed rail line represents a major project in development of the country’s public railway infrastructure. The project envisages the construction of a entirely new high-speed rail llinking the Russian Federation’s two federal cities — its two capitals — Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Key project specifications*:

  • Route distance — 660 km
  • Trip time — 2 h 30 min
  • Maximum speed  up to 400 km/h
  • Track gauge — 1,520 mm
  • Implementation structure — PPP (LCC)
2010 witnessed the planning of principal investments for which a positive assessment was received from Federal State Board Glavgosexpertisa of Russia.

The “Western” track concept approved by JSC Russian Railways is being considered as the basic project approach.
