International & UK Railway News Friday 21st March 2014

Infrastructure news features today...
A very clever use of technology in filming a controlled landslip at Teignmouth...part of the Dawlish sea wall repair work which is progressing well, and could well be on target for the 4th April 2014 reopening...
Crossrail is also making excellent progress. with a report from Farringdon.... The Barmouth to Harlech Cambrian rail line is set to reopen ahead of schedule....
Good communication has been a key factor in Crossrail's PR..which HS2 seems now to be imitating, with regular updates and reports extolling the virtues..and necessity .. of the high speed line going north.. But Stoke thinks that Crewe is not in the same league , with reference to future involvement with HS2...not the sort of communication to win friends and/or allies!
A lack of  communication seems to be the problem for the Swansea - London electrification....the project may "go west"... given the row that seems to be brewing over funding...

Network Rail - Teignmouth Controlled Landslip
From our unmanned aerial vehicle, the 'orange hornet'.
Engineers deal with a huge landslip that is threatening the Great Western Main Line about a mile west of Dawlish.

Engineers became aware on 4 March that about 20,000 tonnes of a cliff face near Teignmouth, had sheared away and slumped about 20m onto the toe of the railway, which sits at the bottom of the cliff at this point. With the help of Devon & Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, engineers have been spraying thousands of litres of water every minute onto the slip to wash away the earth and to encourage the slip to complete its fall to the railway below. Visit www.networkrail.co.uk/dawlish/ for more information and to see the latest from Dawlish, via our webcam.

HS2 will drive urban regeneration
HS2 Growth Taskforce delivers its recommendations to government calling for action now to maximise the impacts of HS2.

Cities in the north and midlands could become global leaders thanks to HS2, predict key figures from business, politics and the trade union movement.
The Growth Taskforce, which brings together figures from across the political spectrum and the private and public sectors - from Sir John Rose, ex-CEO of Rolls-Royce to Frances O’Grady, General Secretary of the TUC – delivered its recommendations to government today (21 March 2014), calling for action now to maximise the economic and social impacts of HS2. The taskforce’s report, ‘HS2: get ready’, recommends the steps needed to ensure the whole country shares in the job and business opportunities HS2 will deliver.
The announcement follows world-leading engineer Sir David Higgins’ report, published on Monday (17 March 2014), setting out how HS2 might be delivered sooner.
The taskforce report calls for action now to simplify and join up funding to deliver construction fast around HS2 stations sites. By accelerating regeneration and development of brownfield land on the route the report argues that big benefits will be seen in just a few years. It also calls for city regions to work together to integrate local transport networks.
Targeted plans for local development, combined with a push to build a workforce with the right skills to fill the 25,000 new jobs to build and maintain HS2, will mean local businesses are in pole position to win the £25 billion worth of contracts that HS2 will generate, delivering wealth creation right across the country.
The taskforce says that a ‘business as usual’ approach will not be enough, and calls for the same levels of ambition and collaboration that saw Britain deliver a hugely successful Olympic Games.
The taskforce’s recommendations include:

  • new local bodies to create tailored growth plans for cities along the HS2 route
  • local leaders and business use HS2 to supercharge their city regions by creating world-leading transport links and kick-starting urban regeneration
  • work to begin now to ensure young people understand and capitalise on the career opportunities HS2 will open up
  • help given to British firms to bid for HS2 contracts
  • ensuring HS2 contracts lead to local job creation, skills development and apprenticeships
Lord Deighton, Taskforce Chair, Commercial Secretary to the Treasury and the former Chief Executive of London 2012, said:

Like the Olympics, HS2 has the potential to be a great British success story, bringing jobs and growth to the whole country. Our report sets out the common sense steps that we need to take now to achieve this.
Sir Howard Bernstein, CEO Manchester City Council and Deputy Chair of the Taskforce, said:
HS2 is not just a railway. It is the opportunity to re-balance Britain and kick-start regeneration in my city and others across the Midlands and the north of England. It is imperative that we work together to do all we possibly can to get the country ready.
Lord Heseltine welcomed the taskforce’s report. He said:
The HS2 Growth Taskforce has shown just the kind of thinking needed to maximise growth and unleash the potential of great cities such as Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield. The report provides a clear view of what must be done, and equally importantly who must do it, if we are to get Britain truly ready to benefit from HS2.
The full report will be published on GOV.UK.

Siemens wins an additional locomotive contract in the USA

Berlin, 2014-Mar-18
  • Five U.S. states order 32 locomotives worth €165 million ($225 million)
  • Option for an additional 225 locomotives
  • Manufacturing at the Siemens plant in Sacramento, California
The Departments of Transportation for the U.S. states of Illinois, California, Michigan, Missouri and Washington have awarded Siemens a contract for the delivery of 32 diesel-electric passenger locomotives. The contract is valued at approximately €165 million ($225 million). It includes a purchase option for another 225 locomotives which will be used for regional and mainline trains traveling at speeds of up to 200 km/h (125 mph). The 32 locomotives ordered are scheduled to be delivered between fall of 2016 and mid-2017. "For Siemens this order marks our entry into the U.S. diesel-electric locomotive market and strongly underscores our long-term vision for the U.S. passenger rail market", Jochen Eickholt, CEO of the Siemens Rail Systems Division, emphasized. The diesel-electric locomotives will be manufactured at the Siemens plant in Sacramento, California.
Siemens Press Picture

On December, 2013, the Illinois Department of Transportation, which is coordinating the order on behalf of California, Michigan, Missouri and Washington, announced its intention to move forward on the order with Siemens. The official Notice to Proceed has now been formally granted.
The Charger locomotives will be used exclusively in passenger service. The primary traction drive, a 4,400 hp-rated diesel engine with 16 cylinders and a cubic capacity of 95 liters, will be manufactured in the U.S. by Cummins Inc., headquartered in Columbus, Indiana. These modern locomotives are powerful and efficient and will deliver a cleaner ride, with better air quality and reduced emission rates ensuring compliance with the Federal Railroad's EPA Tier IV regulation required to be in place in 2015.

As one of the fastest, most efficient and safest modes of transportation, passenger rail is a key priority for U.S. infrastructure development. After all, Siemens wants to play a major role in this lucrative market and can already look back on first successes, for example the recent fanfare surrounding the new, advanced technology electric locomotives built in Sacramento for America's premier passenger rail operator, Amtrak. Just a few weeks ago U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx welcomed the first of 70 Amtrak Cities Sprinter (ACS-64) electric locomotives into passenger revenue service.

The Siemens diesel-electric passenger rail locomotives ordered will greatly help improve transportation on non-electrified railroads throughout the Midwest and the west coast. The contract includes 32 vehicles plus spare parts supply. In addition, there are options for an additional 75 locomotives for use in regional transportation and another 150 locomotives for mainline transportation.

The Charger locomotive reaches a tractive effort on starting of 290 kN with a weight of around 120 tons. The Cummins QSK95 diesel engine is 4,400 hp-rated. These U.S. locomotives are based technically on the Siemens Eurosprinter, Eurorunner and Vectron locomotive platforms which have been proven through several billion kilometers in both freight and passenger service. The components are procured and manufactured exclusively in the United States.

A brief explanation of why it became necessary to widen the F&WHR station in Porthmadog and therefore The Cob.
(Festshopman on YouTube)

The Crossrail Vision is to deliver a world-class and affordable railway, safely, that meets the ever growing transport needs of London in the 21st Century and beyond. Sitting right at the heart of the London network, Farringdon Station is fundamental to Crossrail meeting this aspiration.

The Farringdon Crossrail station comprises two platform tunnels, each the length of two football pitches, linking two new ticket halls in the East and West. The West ticket hall will be shared with Thameslink services, and will have an entrance on Cowcross Street, opposite the existing Farringdon London Underground station. The East Ticket Hall will have entrances at the Long Lane end of the station, on Lindsey Street and Hayne Street. It will link directly with the existing London Underground platforms at Barbican Station and therefore provide access to the Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith and City lines.

When complete, it is planned that over 140 trains per hour will flow through the Farringdon interchange when it becomes a link between Thameslink, Crossrail and London Underground services. Farringdon will be the only station from which passengers will be able to access all three networks.

Farringdon will become one of Britain's busiest train stations, and will be a key link in bringing passengers from outer London to the business hubs in the City and Canary Wharf.

Crossrail Project Manager Nisrine Chartouny leads the construction of the new 200 million Crossrail Farringdon station in the City of London.

In this short video, Nisrine explains the progress that has been made so far in building the new station and some of the challenges that lie ahead in the coming year.
