There are now just over 18 days until the reopening of the line along the damaged Dawlish sea wall;  the Botley landslip is now repaired, and roadworks for the south devon bypass closes the railways
affected.
HS2 is needed, according to Vince Cable. He says there is a "compelling case", but he will have to watch where the line actually goes, or run the risk of upsetting English Heritage, and if Euston is closed during HS2 work, the operators of the Scottish Caledonian Sleeper Service...

There is anger over HS2 rail link timings.

Economics Editor Faisal Islam has an exclusive insight into the long awaited report by Sir David Higgins  on the future of the controversial HS2 high speed rail link. The report will be published tomorrow. Under current plans work on the first phase, between London and Birmingham, is expected to start in 2017. The second phase, from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds is not due to begin until much later - provoking anger among politicians in the north who say the project can't just be about London. Faisal will be in Manchester tonight to reveal all.
