International & UK Railway News Wednesday 26th March 2014

The UK government continues to emphasize the positive benefits of HS2 via the Growth Taskforce report...But still there are those who question the need for the project, and who ask (tongue in cheek?) whether HS2, by not being "joined up" with HS1, is in breach of EU law. We'll see how far that argument goes....probably to Brussels and back!

Crewe still advances its claim to be the location for the HS2 academy...but the south west will be disappointed that HS2 will not even benefit the region by its not being guaranteed "hand me down" rolling stock and locomotives.... should HS2 proceed....

The Welsh Valleys are heating up over the electrification funding.... but good news regarding the arrest of 4 men for Newport cable theft.

Is California dreaming about high speed rail... or will it be a nightmare for the taxpayer?
But Bucharest and Constanta can more than dream about a high speed connection.....

Some designers have a dream....more a vision....of future rail travel.. a VERTICAL high speed rail station....Now that is a dream......

Wake up..... and read the main news stories here......

Lord Deighton, Chairman of the HS2 Growth Taskforce, sets out how HS2 has the potential to be transformational, with significant benefits, but that there's a need to ensure the UK is ready.

Burma's Death Railway: Moving Half the Mountain -BBC 4
Tuesday 1st April 2014. 9 pm
The brutal use of British prisoners of war by the Japanese to build a railway linking Thailand to Burma in 1943 was one of the worst atrocities of the Second World War. For the first time in 70 years, British POWs and their Japanese captors, many now in their nineties, open their hearts to tell the story of what really happened on the 'Death Railway'. Alongside the extraordinary experiences and stories of survival told by the British, their Japanese guards tell of different horrors of war, some never disclosed before.

Exploring how they have survived the terrible memories, this is an often inspiring story that many of these men have waited a long time to tell. What emerges is a warm and emotional journey through the lives of men from different sides reflecting on a terrible event that still haunts them.
