“Rail finances report underlines success story of Britain’s railway”
16/04/2014
Responding to the Office of Rail Regulation’s report ‘GB rail industry financial information 2012-13’, Michael Roberts, director general of the Rail Delivery Group, which speaks on behalf of the rail industry, said:
“The ORR’s report shines a light on why Britain’s railway is such a big success story. An industry focused on attracting more passengers and freight, combined with a commitment by successive governments to invest over the long term, is generating phenomenal growth. This winning formula is helping to reduce unit costs while improving and expanding a vital public service.”

Constructing something new provides us with an opportunity to “get it right”, and in so doing address some of the issues of urban regeneration and integration that are typical of an organically growing city. To achieve this we are working with our developer partners to ensure that where we have had to remove buildings, new high quality developments will replace them.
At the same time as we deliver our stations, there is also an opportunity to create an attractive urban realm outside. We are working with our local authority partners, Transport for London, and other key stakeholders to provide master plans that will provide a sense of connection and transition between the station and its local environment.
Internally, using good design and a selection of materials with reduced environmental impact, we have created spaces that we hope will make the journey more pleasant. Each station will have individuality but will also be instantly recognisable as part of Crossrail through the use of common design elements and colour palette.
Rail operations themselves account for a significant impact, particularly in energy consumption. We have therefore developed a reference design for our first generation of Crossrail rolling stock that places them among the most efficient of their kind.
Our destination will be reached in 2018, when we will not only hand over to the rail operator, but also reach a point from which we can look back and point to:

We believe that the architecture, look and feel of our stations will be something to be celebrated.

Our destination will be reached in 2018, when we will not only hand over to the rail operator, but also reach a point from which we can look back and point to:
- a 10% increase in the rail capacity of London, the single biggest increase by any one project
- a better journey experience an increased construction skills base
- a series of community projects kick-started by Crossrail
- a newly inspired generation of school leavers seeking employment in the engineering and construction industry
