Two new rail stations for West Yorkshire
Department for Transport to provide £9.5 million for stations on Leeds-Bradford line.
Two new stations on the rail line between Bradford and Leeds will improve transport links and support a major regeneration scheme following government agreement to make almost £10 million available to fund the project, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced today (28 May 2014).

The Department for Transport will fund up to £9.5 million of the £16 million Leeds Rail Growth scheme. One of the new stations will support the development of the Kirkstall Forge site, which will include around 1,000 new homes and extensive commercial buildings.
The development is expected to support 300 jobs during construction. On completion it will create an estimated 1,800 jobs directly linked to the development and 300 more across the wider area.

Find out what else the government is doing to support and grow the UK economy

Patrick McLoughlin said:

"These stations represent a major regeneration project for West Yorkshire and provide new transport links for the wider community. They will unlock growth and help create many hundreds of new jobs.

The £9.5 million we are putting into this project shows that the coalition government is serious about investing in the infrastructure the country needs to drive economic growth, both locally and nationally."

The scheme consists of 2 new stations on the Leeds-Bradford railway line — at Apperley Bridge and at Kirkstall Forge — both designed to encourage more people to swap their cars for train journeys. The Apperley Bridge Station will include a park and ride site to serve both Leeds and Bradford whilst the Kirkstall Forge Station will kick start over £400 million of mixed-use development at the Old Forge site.
Today’s announcement grants full approval to the scheme which is promoted by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, allowing work to begin.
The main works are scheduled to start in July with completion of the scheme in August 2015.
The department will provide a maximum of £9.573 million towards the full scheme cost of £15.9 million.

Have your say on the Great Western rail franchise.
The network is set to be transformed over the next 5 years through a multi-billion pound programme of investment.

Passengers in the south-west are being asked for their views on the future of rail services across the region as the government considers how the Great Western franchise can best support the massive investment planned for the network.

Train services between London, Wales and many of the towns and cities of the south-west are set to be transformed through a multi-billion pound programme of investment, which will see extensive electrification of the Great Western route and the roll out of new state-of-the-art electric trains.

To ensure the franchise best meets the needs of passengers, a consultation has been launched to help decide how rail services will be managed over the next 5 years.

Rail Minister Stephen Hammond said:
These are exciting times for the Great Western franchise. Extensive electrification, new state-of-the-art trains and the introduction of Crossrail services will deliver a world-class railway that improves services for passengers and drives economic growth.
To make sure we make the most of this massive investment we want to hear from anyone who has an interest in these vital routes. This is further proof of our commitment to put passengers at the heart of our franchising system.
The Great Western network is set for a series of major works over the next 5 years, including:
  • electrification of the Great Western Main Line from London to Wales and the Thames Valley lines as part of a £7.5 billion upgrade of the network
  • the delivery of 369 new state-of-the-art carriages as part of the government’s £5.7 billion Intercity Express Programme as well as an electric fleet for the Thames Valley lines
  • the introduction of new trains as part of the multi-billion pound Crossrail project
The Great Western franchise delivers 97 million passenger journeys annually and caters to commuters, business and leisure customers. High-speed trains service London, south Wales, the Cotswolds and the West Country as well as semi-fast services throughout the Thames and Kent Valley and between Reading and Gatwick Airport.

The consultation will run to June 26 2014.

Train safety
Media are focusing on the issue of railway safety in the wake of the train accident in northern Uttar Pradesh state on 26 May that killed 25 people.

The accident "is an alarm bell for new railway minister DV Sadanand Gowda to take up the issue of railway safety on a war footing," says The Indian Express.

"It is indeed in this regard that the new government will have to bring about a perceptible change… The new minister for railways is a competent person; he must set the ball rolling," adds The Pioneer.
