UK Office of Rail Regulation(ORR)

ORR data shows continued growth in freight usage

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published a new statistical release which shows that a record amount of freight was carried on Great Britain’s railways in 2013-14.
ORR’s 'Freight Rail Usage' statistical release contains information on rail freight in Great Britain covering the period from 1999-00 to 31 March 2014. Freight usage data provides a useful barometer of economic activity and is closely linked to other industries such as manufacturing and imports/exports.

The data for 2013-14 Q4 (01 January 2014 to 31 March 2014), highlights:
  • Throughout the whole of 2013-14 Britain’s railways carried record amounts of freight on its network - freight moved reached 22.7 billion net tonne kilometres, a 5.8% rise compared to 2012-13.
  • Coal accounted for 35.0% (2.0 billion net tonne kilometres) of freight moved on the rail network in 2013-14 Q4 - the greatest proportion of all commodities carried by rail.
  • Five of the seven commodities which combine to provide the overall total amount of freight moved on the railways experienced an increase over the past year. The largest increases were for Other (which includes domestic automotive, bio mass, and mail) and Construction, which increased by 30.8% and 23.3% respectively.

A snapshot of the progress on the Regional Rail Link project in the later half of 2013 and the first two months of 2014.

Regional Rail Link is a once in a generation investment in better rail services for Victoria and its being built right now. The project is ahead of schedule and certainly is running on budget. We've expended more than 10 million man hours, to deliver 1.4 billion of works this year.

For everyone involved in rail and construction it's an opportunity to see something new, to build something that we can all see is going to be massively important to the community. It's going to be a fantastic outcome, not just for regional Victoria but also for metropolitan Melbourne.
