HS2 - Engine for Growth..

New homes on the horizon for council tenants affected by HS2 (6 August 2014 news release)

Today, High Speed Two Ltd (HS2) and the Department for Transport (DfT) have reached the first stage of an agreement to rehouse Camden council tenants whose homes will be displaced by HS2.
Working in close partnership with the London Borough of Camden, HS2 Ltd and the DfT have entered into an agreement for lease of a new £45.7m development on Netley Street to provide homes for some of those Regents Park Estate council tenants whose council-owned flats will be demolished to make way for HS2 and the redevelopment of Euston.
The 70 new homes, known as the Winchester and Stanhope apartments, will eventually house half of all those council tenant households displaced by investment in HS2.

HS2 Ltd Chief Executive, Alison Munro, said:
"By enabling the rehousing of council tenants from the Regents Park Estate area this scheme cements our commitment to the local community.
"There is a limited supply of suitable homes in this area, so we are very pleased that this deal represents quality accommodation in a convenient location for the families and individuals who will have to move.
"This is a clear demonstration of the DfT and HS2 Ltd’s assurance to provide decent replacement homes with the minimum of disruption for council tenants."
The Winchester and Stanhope apartments are scheduled to be completed at the end of the summer and will be ready to welcome tenants before construction starts in Euston.
ENDS

Notes:

  • The 70 flats in Winchester and Stanhope apartments will be privately rented before the time comes for the London Borough of Camden to rehouse the council tenants
  • Council flats due to be demolished to make way for HS2 include 1950s blocks known as Ainsdale, Silverdale and Esksdale and some flats in Cobourg Street
  • The London Borough of Camden will decide where each tenant will be rehoused
  • HS2 Ltd will continue to work closely with the DfT and the London Borough of Camden to find the right replacement housing for the remainder of the council flats that will be acquired ahead of HS2’s construction.
