Regulator launches consultation on Code of Practice on ticket information

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) is seeking views from retailers of train tickets and passenger and consumer groups to help inform the development of a Code of Practice on ticket information.
The Code, which will be in place by early 2015, will provide clarity on what information passengers need to buy and use tickets, including information on the different types of fares, any restrictions that apply, and key terms and conditions, such as compensation and refund rights.
ORR wants to ensure that passengers are provided with the information they need to get the most appropriate ticket for their journey and travel with confidence.

San Francisco orders 175 light rail cars from Siemens

    Berlin, 2014-Sep-19
    • Largest Light Rail Vehicle contract ever awarded in the USA to Siemens
    • Order worth USD 648 million
    • Option for an additional 85 cars
San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has awarded Siemens a contract to deliver an initial 175 light rail cars for its Muni transit system at a value of USD 648 million. With an option for an additional 85 cars, this is one of the biggest orders for light rail cars ever placed in the USA. With this contract, Siemens secures its position as the U.S. market leader in this segment. Every third streetcar or light rail car operating in the USA today comes from Siemens. The trains will be built at the Siemens plant in Sacramento, California, and the first cars are set to be delivered at the end of 2016.

"This order marks a milestone for Siemens in the history of our U.S. business. With our rail vehicles made in the USA, we're already the leading provider and have delivered more than 1,300 streetcars and light rail cars in 17 cities across North America to date," said Jochen Eickholt, global head of Siemens Rail Systems.
San Francisco is considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the USA. The city is notable for its extensive public transportation network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni). Muni operates a wide variety of transport modes ranging from the city's famed cable cars and historic streetcars, to light rail trains and electric as well as hybrid buses.
The iconic California city is gearing up for a comprehensive modernization of its urban transport fleet and plans to provide energy-saving, modern light rail trains to transport the city's more than 700,000 daily weekday passengers. Siemens will deliver a newly-developed light rail car based on its Model S200 for the San Francisco order. The car is especially energy-efficient thanks to a light-weight drive system that recuperates braking energy, and an LED lighting system that uses up to 40 percent less electricity than standard neon lighting.
The light rail cars will be built according to the Buy America rules at the Siemens plant in Sacramento. Around 80 percent of the electricity used by the plant for manufacturing is generated by a two-megawatt photovoltaic installation on the building's roof. The solar units reduce the facility's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by around 1,470 tons a year.

World premiere: British Secretary of State launches state-of-the-art train to be used on Thameslink route

    Berlin, 2014-Sep-23
The British Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, and Jochen Eickholt, CEO Siemens Rail Systems, alongside Cross London Trains and Govia Thameslink Railway Limited, today presented for the first time three completely assembled cars for the new Class 700 train, to be used as part of the Thameslink project, at Innotrans 2014.

Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport, said: "A world-class rail network needs world-class trains, and it is fantastic to see the spacious and energy-efficient new carriages that passengers will soon be able to use. As part of our long-term economic plan, we are investing record amounts in transforming the rail network, providing more seats, better connections and improved journeys. The Thameslink Programme is central to this. These trains will provide real benefits to passengers when they come into operation."
Jochen Eickholt, CEO Siemens Rail Systems Division, said: "Our project teams in Great Britain and in Germany have put their hearts and souls into developing the second platform generation for Great Britain. They have improved our Desiro product from the standpoint of engineering and production. The Thameslink trains will also benefit in particular from the competence gained in years of maintaining Desiro fleets in Great Britain and around the world. These trains are "designed to maintain". This will ensure that they will transport commuters in Greater London punctually, reliably and comfortably."
The new electric Class 700 train will offer a much improved travel comfort for passengers and alongside the wider infrastructure work will boost capacity and reliability across one of Europe's busiest stretches of railway. The Class 700 trains are approximately 25% lighter than previous generations, and are up to 50% more energy efficient.
The first Class 700 will run on the Bedford to Brighton line in early 2016. By the end of 2018, the Class 700s will run with high frequency through central London every two-three minutes at the busiest times. This equates to 24 trains per hour in each direction through the central core.
Andy Pitt, Executive Chairman, Cross London Trains, said: "Cross London Trains is delighted to have financed these Class 700 trains and it is fantastic to see the state-of-the-art train showcased at such an industry leading event".
Charles Horton, Chief Executive Officer of Govia Thameslink Railway Limited (GTR), which operates Thameslink and Great Northern services, said: "The Class 700 will completely transform the travelling experience of our passengers, unlocking the potential of the Thameslink Programme to increase capacity and address the heavy crowding many experience on a daily basis. Acting as delivery agent for the Government, we will introduce this new fleet, with trains arriving first on Thameslink in 2016 and then on Great Northern a year later. When the two routes join in 2018 there will be fabulous new connections across the south east."

    future Rail

California's high-speed project continues at a rather pedestrian pace, with the most significant hurdle being the legal legitimacy and availability of funding. Between support from the Obama administration and opposition from Republicans, and in the light of rising costs and public apathy, what are the US flagship high-speed line's chances of success?

    The new
Indian Government is pushing ahead with a rail reform plan that's been in the making for decades. We find out whether the country could finally see the much-needed new networks being built. We also investigate the feasibility of China's - perhaps overly ambitious - plans to build international networks including a China-Russia-Canada-America line, and take a look at Japan's proposal to end America's high-speed woes with its maglev technology.

    Moreover, we profile
Bombardier's new Omneo trains which will be rolled out in France as Regio 2N, find out how new traffic control software developed in Scandinavia helps reduce delays by prioritising trains in real time, and round up opinions on the ongoing debate between politicians and London Underground about the closure of all staffed ticket offices on the network.
