Russian and European manufacturers strengthen ties

UIRE (Russian Union of Rail Equipment Manufacturers) signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation with UNIFE (European Rail Industry Association) at the seventh 1520 Strategic Partnership Forum held in Sochi, Russia from 30 May to 1 June.

Bombardier to Supply 300 New Subway Cars for New York City Transit
Bombardier Transportation announced today that it has signed a contract for 300 subway cars with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to be delivered to New York City Transit (NYCT). The order is valued at approximately $599 million US ($623 million CDN, 482 million euro). The MTA Board of Directors approved the award of a contract to Bombardier on March 28, 2012.

CAF signs a contract in Ñatvia for the supply of 41 trains
The main operator in Latvia, Pasažieru Vilciens has awarded CAF the contract for the supply of 34 electrical units and 7 diesel units which run in the Baltic country. The total for the operation exceeds 400 million euros; and includes the maintenance of the vehicles for 30 years, as well as the construction and modernisation of the new facilities where said maintenance tasks shall be carried out.
This contract is the largest rolling stock purchase in history in Latvia, and forms a part of the framework of the Latvian government’s project for infrastructure modernisation. It must be pointed out that some of these trains shall be produced in Latvia, where CAF shall contract out part of the production to the local manufacturer RVR (RÎGAS VAGONBÛVES RÛPNÎCA) thus contributing to local economic and industrial development.

Siemens surpasses sustainability targets
Siemens clearly surpassed its sustainability targets in fiscal 2011. Announced in the company's Sustainability Report 2011, this achievement included a reduction in Siemens' carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 22 percent on a revenue-adjusted basis, compared to fiscal 2006. The target for emissions reduction was 20 percent. Compared to fiscal 2006, Siemens also cut its water consumption 33 percent on a revenue-adjusted basis – considerably surpassing its 20 percent target. "Sustainability is our guiding principle and creates major business opportunities for our company," said Barbara Kux, Siemens Managing Board member and Chief Sustainability Officer. "We've made significant progress in this respect – with regard to both our internal and our external targets."
