Having increased daily capacity since Friday, the railway is today again running extra and longer trains to carry commuters and the hundreds of thousands of spectators travelling to Olympic events such as equestrianism, rowing and football.
• Train companies are providing 570,676 extra seats today, operating over 4.2 million seats in total.
• Fully staffed trains are on standby at different points of the capital, ready to head off to stations should they become especially busy.
• As at midday today, 94% of services were running to schedule across the network.
Over 350,000 spectators have now taken advantage of the special Games rail tickets, and they will remain on sale throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.
The Transport Co-Ordination Centre, set up specifically for the 2012 Games, will keep transport operators informed of each other’s plans and how people are using the public transport system, and help operators provide passengers with the most up-to-date travel information.
A spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies said: “A big thank you goes to passengers who have got into the Olympic spirit and heeded advice to plan ahead. By steering clear of transport hotspots and staggering their journeys where possible, hundreds of thousands of commuters and spectators were yesterday able to travel by rail to work or watch an event and get home afterwards.
“From Friday through to Monday, train companies working with Network Rail have provided more than three million additional seats by running extra and longer trains, and have ensured that there are hundreds more staff on hand to help passengers at the busiest stations.”
Over the Olympics, rail users are advised to plan ahead before travelling by visiting the Get Ahead of the Games website and to give themselves plenty of extra time to get to their final destination.
