With the Olympics building up to its busiest days so far, train companies are providing significant amounts of extra capacity to get spectators to events and home again today and over the weekend.
• Train companies are providing 567,736 additional seats and operating nearly 4.25 million seats in total today, the highest number in a single day since the Olympics began.
• On Saturday and Sunday, train companies will run more than two million extra seats in total, including additional services first thing in the morning and into the early hours the next day.
• Hundreds of extra staff from train companies and Network Rail are working at the busiest stations.
• Nearly 400,000 spectators have now taken advantage of the special 2012 Games Train Tickets which will remain on sale throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.
A spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) said: “As Team GB wins more medals and Olympic excitement mounts, train companies are running huge amounts of extra seats from first thing in the morning until the early hours the next day to get spectators to venues, to line the streets or just to join in the fun and then safely home again.
“A big thank you goes to passengers who, by keeping clear of transport hotspots and staggering journeys where possible, have helped the railway to run smoothly. And we urge everyone to keep planning ahead because we expect the next few days to be the busiest so far.”
As at midday today, 93% of services were running to schedule across the network.
The Transport Co-Ordination Centre, set up specifically for the 2012 Games, keeps transport operators informed of each other’s plans and how people are using the public transport system, and helps operators provide passengers with the most up-to-date travel information.
Over the Olympics, rail users are advised to plan ahead before travelling by visiting the Get Ahead of the Games website and to give themselves plenty of extra time to get to their final destination.
To get the latest real-time rail travel information, passengers should use the National Rail Enquiries (NRE) service, paid for and run by train companies, which they can access on the move. Passengers can:
