Planning Policy supports rail freight. (Freight on Rail) 11th April 2012

Responding to the publication of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) today:

Philippa Edmunds, Freight on Rail Manager said, “This planning policy recognises that planning permission for more terminals is needed to move more long-distance freight onto the railways to reduce road congestion, road accidents and pollution". (para 31).

She added, “It is excellent that local authorities retain the ability to identify and safeguard sites as there is a limited number of suitable transhipment points beside the rail network." (para 41)

DCLG announced the National Planning Policy Framework 27th March

Para 31 provision of viable infrastructure necessary to support sustainalbe development including large scale facilities such as rail freight interchanges ...

Para 41 Local planning authorities should identify and protect, where there is robust evidence, sites and routes which could be cricial in developing infrastructure to widen transport choice.
