High Speed Rail is in the news again.... what a surprise!
If the UK  thinks that the estimated cost (how many billions?) is a price worth paying, then HS2's chief executive's comment that it had better be done quickly, or costs will spiral (out of control?) is obviously meant as a hurry up to the waverers...
But there are those who still think that the money could be better spent on the regions...
In the south west,, the electrification of the Great Western mainline will mean that faster Hitachi built trains will reach Bristol in 2018....
In the US, one point of view suggests that money for high speed rail should be spent on truck dedicated highways....
And there are those groups (consortia) who want a piece of the action...at least on the proposed Moscow-Kazan line. ...

Please take a look at The Skibbereen Eagle's piece on the Euston Arch.. and savour the Think Railway's recent articles...

The Skibbereen Eagle

Euston we have a problem

The Eagle has long supported the campaign to rebuild the Euston Arch as part of the reconstruction of Euston Station, the first great gateway station to London on the line built byRobert Stephenson, the “Father of the Railway” whose statue is in front of the station. The demolition of the Euston Arch along with the rest of Euston Station was regarded as one of the greatest acts of Post-War architectural vandalism in Britain, the campaign to save it lead to the foundation of the Victorian Society and involved the indomitable Sir John Betjeman. Its full story is told by The Eagle here.
