International & UK Railway News Thursday 24th April 2014

There is routine news, and there is other news. The General Electric taking over Alstom(?) has certainly got the news media talking, and the stock markets interested! We shall see...

In the UK , swords are being sharpenend in advance of a key debate in the House of Commons on the Hybrid Bill, which paves the way for the construction of HS2.. the high speed link that will link London with Birmingham, initially, and further north subsequently.

Though if Alex Salmond has his way, and if Scotland does go independent after the referendum vote, the Scots won't wait for England...they'll start a high speed link themselves... going south...
We shall await developments on all fronts....

    Trade by Mode
While trade by truck rose 2.6 percent, trade using other modes declined 0.6 percent from year to year. Air declined 3.1 percent, rail declined 2.5 percent and vessel declined 0.3 percent. Pipeline rose 0.1 percent. (Figure 1, Table 2).

Truck carries nearly three-fifths of U.S.-NAFTA trade and is the most heavily utilized mode for moving goods to and from both U.S.-NAFTA partners. Truck carried 59.8 percent of the $89.6 billion of U.S.-NAFTA trade in February 2014, accounting for $27.8 billion of exports and $25.8 billion of imports.

The value of freight carried by rail decreased from year to year but rail was still the second largest mode, at 14.7 percent, followed by vessel at 9.6 percent, pipeline at 7.6 percent and air at 3.5 percent. The surface transportation modes of truck, rail and pipeline carried 82.2 percent of the total NAFTA freight flows.

A snapshot of the progress on the Regional Rail Link project in the later half of 2013 and the first two months of 2014.

Regional Rail Link is a once in a generation investment in better rail services for Victoria and its being built right now. The project is ahead of schedule and certainly is running on budget. We've expended more than 10 million man hours, to deliver 1.4 billion of works this year.

For everyone involved in rail and construction it's an opportunity to see something new, to build something that we can all see is going to be massively important to the community. It's going to be a fantastic outcome, not just for regional Victoria but also for metropolitan Melbourne.

UK Office of Rail Regulation (ORR)

Rail journeys continue to rise across England, Scotland and Wales

The total number of rail passenger journeys across England, Scotland and Wales increased by 3.3% over the past year to 1.27bn – more than double the number of journeys in 1995-96, reveal new statistics published today by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR).
The 'Regional Usage Profiles' statistical release details rail passenger journeys taking place within Great Britain from 1995-96 up to 2012-13. Data shows rail travel between 11 regions - East of England, East Midlands, London, North East, North West, Scotland, South East, South West, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.
    The new figures show that:
    • The total number of journeys in 2012-13 has increased by 3.3% to 1.27 billion. Journeys between different regions increased by 2.7% to 421.2 million, largely driven by the 2.8% increase in journeys to/from London.
    • The number of journeys wholly within regions increased by 3.6% to 847.8 million due to increases of 6.3% (an additional 25.6 million journeys) in London, 2.9% (2.3 million) in Scotland, 4.2% (1.2 million) in East of England and 3.1% (676,000) in the South West.
    • The total number of journeys for Scotland was up 2.9% to 89.6 million. Over 90% of journeys were within Scotland with Lothian, Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire seeing the largest growth rates.
    • Journeys within Wales increased by 1.0% since 2011-12 to 19.2 million. The largest increase of 7.8% occurring on services to/from Merthyr Tydfil, continuing the increase demand for the town which has grown by over 60% in the past five years.
ORR will host a live Twitter Q&A with a senior data analyst on 30-April. Send us your questions @railregulation on methodology, improvements to the data quality or ORR's wider statistical work using #openrail
To access the complete data and report visit: http://dataportal.orr.gov.uk/
Note: The journey numbers in Regional Usage Profiles differ from the Passenger Rail Usage because the origin and destination named on the ticket is classed as one journey and does not take into account any changes of train. Passenger Rail Usage statistics are based on counting each leg of the journey.
